aftermarket or standard?

Hey, After some recent problems with a flat battery that had me delving under the seat, I noticed that my ignition module has two grey dials/knobs on it.  The one is advance/retard and the other is max RPM.  Is this a standard module or an after market one?  The previous owner fitted a mikuni carb,  after market mufflers and a high flow filter.

The module is black and has a part number, but no manufaturers name or stickers. So it doesnt look like a screaming eagle.  Funnily enough, it has a date hand engraved on it, that is a whole year after the bike was rego'd.

The workshop manual says that the timing is non adjustable and that the max RPM can only be set by the dealer.  So if this is after market, it may be useful if I ever want to get it tuned oe dyno'd in the future.

Can anybody cast some light on this?  The module is under the seat on the left hand side, so if ya feel like having a look to see if yours has the two dials...........................I'd be grateful.

    04 Dyna FXD (carby)

    Thanks guys n gals

Thanks guys, Ive done a bit of searching and it appears to be a Dyna TC88.

Not sure which model, but it looks exactly the same as far as the controls are conserned.  I still cant see the brand name as its underneath, but ive downloaded the manual from Dyna and im all set to have a play.

Im pretty wrapped that my "stock" super glide has a full stage 1 tune.  It goes hard so it may have had a cam as well.  But no way to tell I suppose, without tracking down the original owner.

    Stay safe

I'd be extremely surprised if HD HQ or dealer would help "Track down the previous owner"

Have you blokes heard of Privacy Laws?

Maybe the dealer may know of work done or you could possibly drop the cam cover & have a look.

If your going to have a play with ignition settings & curves I would assume a degree of mechanical knowledge &/or tuning experience but the comment that there is "no way to tell"regarding the cams would make my assumption incorrect.

The fact you have an adjustable ignition would point to a cam change.

I would also wonder if when it was originally installed it was set to 5/5 & left or dialled in to suit.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

Well, ive been a car, truck mechanic and plant fitter for 25yrs. But ur right i have very little mechanical knowledge of Harleys. But short of ripping out the cam cover, chains etc measuring lobes and dwell, i,m not sure if how can tell if it has a stock cam or not............Unless you or another forum member knows different? This old dog is always open to learn something new in the trick department.

I thought that the ignition upgrade was part of a stage 1 tune and a cam change/ head work was stage 2.

It was set to 40A, and 6500 rpm so something has been "dailed in". But this was to far advanced and made starting a little hard at times. It also gave a harsh engine note and pinged in 4th and 5th gear at all but highway work when given some. Ive dialed it back to 38a and 6000 rpm for now and it starts easier and is smoother to ride in town and doesnt ping. I will try the 38B setting as per the newly downloaded guide from dynatech, when I get a dry day and see how that goes.

Your probably right about the "privacy" thing tho. Although the sales declaration does state that the previous owners details are available on request. But I believe that this only stands at the time of sale. I will speak to the dealer, (who didnt seem aware of the ignition up grade), to see if he can contact the previous owner and see if hes willing to talk to me.

Had a look at this & seen that ignition upgrade can be included at stage 1 although not really required for most applications.

Definately required at stage 2 though which reflects my comment about cams.

Adjustable pushrods would be a good indicator if cams/lifters have been changed from stock.

If all is stock,no need to change rods. Easy to check.

Wasn't actually aware that your bike was hard to start & pinging until now as the start of this thread made mention of the discovery of the ignition only but your obviously on the right track.
