Looking at Iron 883 - bars n stuff for a short bloke

As it happens, I went into the local dealer today to check out a couple of bikes.   Well, actually, I initially just called them to find out how long it would take to get me a black Iron if I ordered it - perhaps weeks, more likely months as they have none left and are finding it extremely difficult to get more (typical sales pitch to get you to buy now).

Then he mentioned he has one in stock now, a yellow one!  To which I say "ergh" and he goes on to tell me that nobody likes it and they need to move it so they are going to paint it, drop some nice Harley badges on it and an exhaust system.   Then the usual "come into the shop and lets talk"...  So I did...

I walk into the shop and theres 32473217 Harleys around with all sorts of crazy mods and paintjobs and I finally find the little baby I'm looking for and yes, yellow kinda looks dumb to say the least.   They are willing to go glossy black on it with a black short-shot exhaust and he will give me a drive-away price on it tomorrow so I can do the maths on it myself.   Naturally wanted me to go the "whole hog" and get air cleaner/fule injectors etc but I know I can get that later for the grunt-boost if I'm just getting exhausts for the noise for now.

I also sat on the Superlow and was impressed (I'm a short fucker, 170cm or thereabouts) but I found my knees up around my chest and didnt find it all that comfy but I really liked the bars on it compared to how it felt on the Iron.    So I asked for a price with those bars on the Iron.   I also reckon with the roads up here that the Superlow will get scraped up something fierce just on driveways and speed bumps so that rules that out.  Loved the seat on the Iron more, felt like it had more padding, maybe I just wasnt clenching as much on the Iron but it felt softer still.

It got me thinking, what other bars do people find comfy for a short fucker?  I'm a complete Harley noob and I know its all individual but I dont really have alot of mates with Harleys to compare and test out.  I like how the Superlow let me relax my arms a little whereas the Iron was getting me to put my arms at full length, just before the point I have to lean towards them.   I could manage on the stock Iron bars but I want something more comfortable for it...

Kinda stoked if I can pick it up glossy black (yeh I know, but I'm a glossy type of guy) and with a black shorty exhaust system for a similar price to stock as they need to move the "dog" stock.

You should be able to use most bars, however use different size risers to give you a better reach/grab/or whatever you want to call it. I'm only 5'8 and am planning on going to a flat broomstick bar over the coming months, particularly when I can afford to do the change from apes back to a straight bar! The simplest approach would be go through it with the dealer, they sound pretty keen to get a sale, so see if you can work through a few different styles and get them to commit to something comfortable!

Hey Shred, I had the same experience almost with the black/yellow Iron. Just out curiosity what price did he give you for a painted yellow iron with pipes?

yeah , when i saw the Yellow , i was really surprised that Harley would even consider such a colour for the 883 . Good on them for giveing it a go but i think it was a  mistake ( probably get 3782 posts now saying they like the colour ) . Nothing ventured , nothing gained , i always say .

Hey Josh, he's still working out the deal for me as such but I'll definately let you know once I confirm the price.  Should be around the $14k mark as they are wearing the total cost for the paintjob.

yeah thats what my dealer said too. didn't into specifics about price, but he did say that the paint job would be "included". I'm sure they're keen as hell to get rid of those yellow bikes before the 2012 models get announced. I'd push a bit, you might get the pipes thrown in too on the yellow bike. They don't seem to keen on doing anything price-wise on the black irons.

Personally, I don't like the yellow on any of them. The picture I posted in the 2012 Range thread, looks good though, kinda yellow/white two-tone, and the Gold sparkle someone posted in another thread was awesome. "Chrome Yellow" though, not my cup of tea.
