Matte vs Gloss Black Iron?

Hey guys, just a quick question for any Iron owners out there, or any one else that wants to chime in for that matter.

I still have about 4 weeks until my Iron lands, and when I ordered it the dealer offered the yellow Iron they had in stock with a black gloss finish. He said they had a Nightster paint kit in stock to use on it. At first I didn't even entertain the idea becuase I really did want the matte finish, but I've read a couple people saying the matte finish is a bit more "delicate" than a gloss finish. So i've been thinking of taking him up the gloss paint job offer, but just not sure really. I think I'd prefer the matta, but I don't want to get a new coat of paint every couple years. (might also be worth noting I'll be riding this to and from every day and weekends so at a minimum, 500K a week, in all weather)

So given the choice what would you choose? (the 4 week wait vs in stock isn't a factor here either)

Well I would choose the gloss black any day as I'm a fan of being able to polish it and make it all nice n shiny.

Mind you, I don't yet own my Harley but I've asked a similar question and because of the climate I live in and the fact my bike will live outdoors in the sun and rain then I would prefer something easier to keep intact.

However, I would LOVE to see some pics of a denim black bike after a few years wear and see how it fades in places or wears overall and then compare...  I know how old glossy bikes look if they are well looked after but I've not yet seen a denim after a few years.

I thought the idea of the matte finish was specifically to wear and fade in parts like jeans, adding to the "grunge" look the irons have. You know - it's about getting into the grunge...! That way, you don't have to waste good riding time polishing it.

Having said all that, I still give it a good wipe-down after a day's riding... seems only right after all. Depends on the look you're going for I guess - the black pipes won't ever be gloss, I dunno - I guess I'm just not a glossy kind of guy.

Shred, it was something said in your thread that got me thinking about it again.

I'd love to see what the denim paint looks like after 5+ years, but as far as I know, they haven't used this paint in the past, so I gess we're the guinea pigs.

The grunge thing, I like the idea of it, I think most people do, but again, its just, does "cool grunge" turn into "shithouse" in a few years.

Matt Black is like Daimoh said. Lazy washers/ Id rather be riders.

I havent even needed any kind of soap yet. Hose and dry.

Gets blotchy if its rained on.... so I put a cover on or in the garage - as I should anyway.

While I like the even matt black on my bike from new, i really dont mind long term if it ends up shagged. Will make it look more rat... grew up around a lot of hot rods so thats fine by me. Rub throughs or shiny patches to me are like the same thing on a guitar... its a story of the good times thats been had using it.

I would love to have a show and shine custom beast that I take care of in a different way, but I dont see the iron like that.

Yeah, that guitar metaphor really sunk for me too. I've purposefully made a guitar look "shit" before just for that old well used look.

    Stickin with the denim..

Matte denim paint all the way for me. The other guys have said it already - I want the 'loved up' rub marks after using it, and being able to clean it with a wipe down as Taffy says is the only way to go. The gloss black would be different, but not really my taste. And again I say - the chrome yellow Iron is uber gay.

anybody got some pictures of a gloss black iron, just curious how it will look, i'd go with the denim and once it turns to shit paint it black, really if you take the parts off yourself and drop them at a panel shop it should cost all that much, even less if you are able to use sandpaper..

very true. couldn't cost that much at all. I googled for some gloss black irons and couldn't find any. If anyone can find one, I'd love to see it too.

I love my Silver Iron 883 i liked the black but there can be too much i think.

Also the silver does glow when the sun hits it, but the yellow is just plain awful

And taxi cab yellow too.... Me thinks someone else in the design stage saw it as a Boyd Coddington type yella.... throw back to ford rod yellows.

Matte for me. And brown is underrated if ya looking for something different.
