To Dyno Or Not To Dyno

Lookng for some input and suggestions on where to go next with my bike.

I ride a 2009 Soft Tail Custom with a Performance Machine Heavy Breather, Hooker Trouble Maker pipes and a Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner, however at the moment the engine internals are still stock.

Im curious as to whether you guys think it would be worth while to dyno my engine or to just upgrade to the latest maps available from Screamin eagle?

I was hoping over winter to upgrade to the 103ci kit, but with finances the way they are at the moment that is looking like a project for next winter.

What are your thoughts guys, dyno tune or just upgrade to the latest maps and save the dyno tuning for after the engine upgrades?

Actually not an easy question to answer. Depends on the Dyno operator. Some like to work on wide open throttle tuning and some are more focused on low, mid range and top end, there are variables and its not quite that easy to get all stages right.

Just my opinion only but download the latest maps for your spec engine and mods and worry about a dyno later when you do the upgrades.

I cannot begin to count how many I have put on the dyno and then had to change settings in "real life" driving/riding. This will open up a whole debate on dyno tuning no doubt but to be honest I have found a dyno better for development and troubleshooting more, and I also reckon a lot of people are being ripped off going out and spending big dollars on a dyno tune when the work has already been done and maps are ready available to download for the changes you have made, why re-invent the wheel? maybe for a 3 or 4 horsepower gain, but that maybe at top end where you dont spend much time anyway.

Choice is yours but at the end of the day.

I was riding a 2009 96" Street bob with a SE Heavy Breather, SE slip ons and a Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner.

The map installed was a canned map from the SEPST cd, and I had a dyno power run done to see what I'd got.

After 3 runs on the dyno, I had 81.32 hp and 97.08 Tq. the boys in the shop were pretty impressed for a relatively standard 96"

However, on the hunt for more power, I've just done a 103" Stage 2,(ins SE255 cams)  and a D& D fat cat.............. still breaking in at the moment, but looking forward to the dyno results.

The upgrade cost me $1500 landed from the US, plus my time to install, and oil, consumables etc.

If I was you, I'd get a power run only on a dyno (look at about $65 for a 3 run printout) and  wait till you can go 103.........just my opinion

And when you've put the 103 in and get used to it , what next? when will it end? be happy with what you've got.
