i believe 100.000 ks is supposed to be normal. but if its all apart, then i would change it. then you know your right for another 100k . the dealers will charge around 3 to 4 hundred just for labour. and another 3 to 4 for the belt. as you probably know. peace of mind for the price of a belt to me is worth the price. i once rode to perth and back on a belt that had grooves in the face due to worn pulleys. the whole 10.000ks i was worried it might let go. theres never a warning.

    cheers.

I probably wouldn't. Generally these belts can tolerate a lot of abuse eg burnouts, etc, except for a stone or tear on the edge of the belt. A stone in the middle is fine. A little bit of fray on one side of the belt like you have described is fine also. This can happen due to a larger tyre being fitted and the bike being rolled backwards. The belt tends to slide over to the outer edge of the pulley, and subsequently rub against the edge of the tyre.

As a previous owner of a 91 FXR, them were the days when your belt was nice, wide and thick.

Does it have any nicks, cuts or tears?
Whats wrong with the front pulley? the belt should be the wear point.

You don't say what framed bike, Sporty, FXR, Softail or FLH

I say, If it ain't broken, don't touch it.

just my 2 cents from a poor country fitter.
