Dead Power Commander

    G'day people

Bike shit itself on the road today!!

It keeps blowing the ECM fuse. I disconnected the Power Commander and plugged the ECM back through to standard and it doesn't blow the fuse. Bike will run but runs very rich - blows black smoke.

Then I put Fuel Pack that I had, back on and tried to adjust. Now the throttle position part of the fuel pack is all over the place.

I am thinking Power Commander has shit itself and has damaged either the throttle position sensor or the ECM.

    Any ideas???

    Hi Waddy,

check your wiring around the battery also. The 07s had a recall to install a plastic guide that rerouted the cables around the battery terminals. We have had instances where the wiring had worn through the insulation and shorted out on the battery terminal. This did a couple of things......sent all the sensors into no-mans land and frying PC3s resulting in the ECM not knowing what the hell was going on....
Having said that, it could be a PC3 problem, but disconnecting should identify that and the bike will still run reasonably.

PC3s have been know to fail and if it is an aussie import (not a grey import) then the distributor will replace if still under warranty.

If the bike is running like a wild pig without the PC3, then Scottys suggestion seems quite feasible. If not, it might be a trip to the warranty folk........

As Scotty said, remote electronic Diagnosis is a bit challenging over the ethernet....

Let us know how you go.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Scotty - tried your idea but it didn't make any difference. Mick - has had the recall with the battery leads, can't see any problem.

My biggest problem is my nearest Harley dealer is 450 kms away, so any ideas are welcome.

    Thanks guys. Waddy

    Hi Scotty

Checked the error codes. Had 2 codes - P123 (TP Sensor High EFI) & P374 (CKP Sensor Synch Error EFI). Cleared the codes, started her up, checked the codes again and P374 came up again. Cleared it again. Now bike won't start at all!!

    Waddy,

did you go through Scotty's reset procedure that he mentioned intially after clearing the codes? This may help reset everything. Or you could actually have a dud sensor that has been fried or put outside its operating range.

Replaced Throttle Position Sensor and Crank Position Sensor today. Still coming up with error code for CPS. Talked to the Service Manager at Fraser's and he thinks the computer has copped a spike. So it looks like I am taking the bike for a ride on the trailer!! Thanks for all your input.

More to the point, what caused the spike? the PC3 would not have done it.....whatever ECM is installed would still be suseptible.

The Fuse for the ECM is a 15A fuse, even though the ECM would run on less than 1A in most cases. Fuses will only protect the wiring from melting, but not the ECM from buzzing. The ECM could be better protected electronically than it currently is.

    Cheers

most of my experience with PC3 probs has been the stock harness failing and shorting damaging the PC3, ECM and electronics. not so much the PC3s fault, but definitely blamed and a victim of the scenarios....

    cheers

G'day people, Just thought I would finish the saga off! Had to replace the ECM - it was fried. Have sent the Power Commander back to Dynojet in US. Still waiting for reply from them. Bike was at Fraser's for 3 weeks. Thought 'bugger it!' and got them to put in a 103 kit that I bought on E-bay a while ago and had them put a Super Tuner on it as well. Rode the bike home - 450 kms - and she is running sweet. Got to take her back after 1,000 kms and they will retune it.

Thanks for all your input. See you on the road!!

Just as a matter of interest, when I pulled my PC111 out last week to fit my new Tmax, the PC111 wire harness had been stuffed through a gap in the mudguard to make room for the extra wire and plugs and the PC111 body under the seat. The outer plastic sheath was cut and a number of wires were flattened very near to being cut through. I would emagine that if those wires were earthed out the ECM and PC111 could have fried.

I am running stock EFI with a screaming eagle map in it to match the SE stage 1 kit or whatever it was. It runs like a charm and is great on economy.  I have never understood why everyone swaps for the T-Max or PC111.   Can someone explain the benefits to me?

Stock ... I recon there's more bikes out there with V&H pipes than any other, including HD.  What you say makes sense though Scotty. I happend to chose SE pipes so I suppose I have not had quite the need. Tinkering is fun though. Cheers.
