Hey everyone I'm looking for some information on what's legal in qld in regards to bobber style bikes I have owned dirt bikes for years and was looking at making a change to a sporster style bike.
I really like the style of the bike in the picture below but what what I have read so far most of this bike might be illegal on Australian roads what could I get away with and what would really attention from the police thanks db

What about chopping the rear fender, removing the belt guard and the hangers they are 16"?
As for the side plate I'm not really worried about.

The brake light - is that with the side mounted plate? Front indicators and mirror? Or am I just missing it... and I love the Bobber but it's only a matter of time before you're pinged for the side plate.

Dont know if this helps but...

That is where my 48 is heading. Same pipes, 16" hangers, springer seat and the famous side mount plate. Who cares is what I say? Just be nice to the cops face who pulls you/us over. I have found most of them to be reasonable so far.

Well than, thanks for the responses everyone. looks like I will have to go in Another direction.
Bit of a shame I really like the striped down look, I had a feeling everything I wanted to do would be illegal.
(The bike in the photo does have a speedo it's on the other side below the tank)

     QLD is similar http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c792a0c9-92b1-43ee-933b-7bdd8b20842f/pdf_modification_motor_vehicles2.pdf

Rigid conversion needs to be engineered, and I doubt struts would pass, weld on kits look better anyway.
Rear guard needs to cover 45 degrees from vertical.
No approval needed for 883-1200 conversion though

A chain guard must cover the chain to a point at least
300mm to the rear of the rearmost foot rest or above the
centre of the rear drive sprocket.

Any replacement exhaust system must be as near as
practicable to the original component specification
and/or comply with ADR noise requirements

The handle bars of a motorbike must extend at least
250mm, but not over 450mm, on each side of the
longitudinal axis of the motorbike. This measurement
does not include mirrors and lights

The lowest part of the hand grip on the handle bars
must not be higher than 380mm above the attachment
point of the handle bars to the motorbike. Hand grips on
the handle bars must be fitted symmetrically

You could go 10" shocks, and state will depend on handlebars but that is too high for anywhere

I like the look of it though..

You could get a hardtail conversion engineered, but as that drops the seat down a bit, you'd probably have to run drag bars

Tired, the bike you are looking at belongs to a guy on the XLforum, yeah? I think he is called "Hawg Dawg". Anyways, you could do a pretty good approximation of this bike without making it a cop magnet. Try 14 inch apes, springer seat, tank lift with wire tuck and remove the lower belt guard only. If you start with a Nightster or Iron, then the rear guard is already bobbed pretty well, so no need to chop it any further. Add a side mount plate, even tho it is illegal, and you can strip the plastic $hit off the rear guard leaving a really clean look. Most of the look you are after will be there with these mods. Anyways, just my 2c worth. Cheers, TC

With my mods I took an approach that meant any defectable mods could be quickly and easily returned to legal condition in a matter of minutes. Also, I avoided mods that I considered what police are looking for 'at a glance' when they see the bike.

Obvious mods they would look for are:

    Number plate position
    Exhaust loudness
    No indicators/speedo/mirrors
    Crazy high ape hangers

The rear belt guard is a non issue and IMO police wouldn't even look at this aspect unless they decided to go through the whole bike.

I have solid rear struts to put on (pending spring solo seat fitment) and I also think the police wouldn't even consider this at a glance.

Curiously, I've run with and without a front fender numerous times without a problem, while my riding buddy has a springer front end with no fender and has ridden for two years without qualms.

The chopped rear fender on the bobber you've shown also requires the frame to be cut, and either the fender mounts are shortened as shown or, as with many other Sportster bobbers, cut off altogether. This IMO is not only a defect magnet but would potentially cause rego issues as well as resale issues. I'd love to do this to my bike but not being able to rego/sell it stops me.

I modified the number plate mount on my Iron 883 to look much neater and tidier but still conform to legality aspects.

The exhaust is way louder than is legally allowed but I can refit the stock mufflers in minutes.

The bulky mirrors are easily replaced with smaller 'dentist' style ones.

In short - if you use your imagination you can build a much cleaner looking bobber project that will not be a defect magnet.
