Hi everyone, thanks for a great forum.

I've ridden bikes for 17 years, and have gotten to the point in my life where I'd like to buy a Harley.  Budget only allows for a sporty at this stage.

I've found a 1996 1200 sporty with 29,000km and a service record for $10,000.  It's very clean and unmodified except for mufflers that look like screamin' eagle copies, and an original sissy bar.

I've looked around a bit, and I really like this one.  Does it sound like a good deal?  Any nasty things I should know about that model?

    Thanks - here's a pic of it.

i would have thought you might be able to find something a bit newer for that sort of money it seems to be a buyers market on used bikes ,but if a genuine good thing?

Thanks for all of your comments and advice.  I really appreciate them.

There are a few cheaper sportys, however, they're generally not as original or have more KM's.

I'm going to have a closer look, and will let you know how it all goes.

Why not go for a much cheaper, but later model 883 Sportster and put a 1200 Kit in it. Will work out a lot cheaper and you'll have a much later model. I reckon KC did his conversion for under $2K.

    Good luck.

Yep, good advice Bob, 2k for fuel injected models ('07 up) but if you buy an '04 to '06 883 you can do the 1200 conversion for around $1,200.

Since cash is an issue just buy an 883 (I've seen a few 04 plus customs go on Ebay go for $11k and under) then wait for the 1200 conversion till later - lower Ks and rubber mounted engine etc etc. My 07 custom cost 11K.
