LED Spots

They make a high performance H4 halogen globe look like a soft fried egg and are comparable if not a little better than 35 watt HID's.

The spread is somewhere between a spot and a flood, so when the two are lined up to meet in the centre, both sides of the road and into the bush on each side is well iluminated,( the bright white light appears to overpower and cancell out the H4 high beam)

I guess they'de be better described as long range driving lights.

After seeing what these LED's are capable of I'm going to try a 120 LED H4 globe instead of the HID set up, will let you know how that goes.

With an H4 LED as the main headlight and these two Cree5 spots, I'm figuring that the total power consumption will be around 45 watts,

(no need for releys and extra wiring etc, all power switched straight off the original headlight harness.)

How far? Lots more than any of the high performance halogens OR HID conversions I've tried so far.

I'll try and get a couple pics for comparison and post.

Yep, and the pics probably don't do justice to the scene.

It's going to be interesting to see what the 120 LED H4's are like, got a couple coming in the post from HK cheaper than chips.

The H4 120 LED main headlight replacement globe is 450 LM,,, but the little Cree 5 spots are 1600 LM each.

(link to 1600 LM Cree 5 spots is in the original post)

    Hi Guys!

I read with interest regarding your efforts to improve lighting on your bikes, I assume that for all of us that do venture out at night (speaking for myself) this area of the machine could be better, especially riding in the land of Oz. I purchased a HID installation kit for my 09 FXST some time ago but have not installed it yet as the kit would appear to better suited to a 4 wheel vehicle than a motorbike.

The actual size of the kit presents the biggest problem, were to hide it is one of the challenges along with cutting into the headlight to accommodate the extra wiring, nothing will fit under the tank or the seat.
I am toying with the idea of removing my horn and positioning this under the rear gaurd, relocating the coil to the horn position and then utilising the horn cover to the front (top of the frame fork). This will allow covering of the HID ballast boxes and at the same time the HID wiring stays within reach of the head light, a lot of mucking around.

Ideally I would like to either replace the headlight bulb and maintain the same current draw as per specs or replace the headlight with a better unit and at the sane time not draw more current then specs allow for.

I am also assuming that both Rider and Hilly have gone down this path? and hence the fitting of the spotties. Are you aware of any other alternatives?

Hi Paul, sounds like you may have ended up with a conversion kit for the two eyed beasties, and yep, there's a lot of fruit to hide if that's the case.

Even if you're savy with the electrics and side cutters, and can modify that two headlight kit to suit a single light application space is still going to be a problem.

I found that that single motorcycle kit with "plug and play" wiring a lot less demanding in the "space needed" department. Although, in saying that, running a 5 3/4 headlight will still test your component placing skills.

If you have the 7 inch headlight you should be able to place all components inside the headlight, but the 5 3/4 poses a problem.

To get things working with the 5 3/4 light I placed the balast and igniter in a tool bag that I have fitted to the risers, it's within reach of the headlight and hides those components quite well. Wires come out of the back of the headlight, up through the middle of the top tripple tree and into the bottom of the tool bag through a small slit cut in the appropriate place. Works well and hides everything.

(+ one hole and a rubber gromet in the back of the headlight housing)

This idea should work well with a 7 inch headlight as well if you you're not happy with fitting all the components on the inside of the housing.

(If needed, the same seller that does the plug and play motorcycle conversion also sells globe to igniter extension leads.)

    As Hilly says, the other option is to go the H-D LED upgrade,,, here's a couple links;

    www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp

Eventually I think that the H-D LED will produce the ultimate lighting option, although, again as Hilly has already said, stingy price

In the meantime, those little LED spots are the ducks guts and light up all those stray prehistoric, sprung loaded grass hoppers that line the road of a night.

( Edit Note; after a bit of checking around, M&M's sell the H-D LED inserts at the best price, but the 5 3/4 chrome (73273-11) are on back order from Harley till early June.)

     M&M, 5 3/4" chrome, #73273-11, US$348.20 plus $69.95 freight to WA.

All other HD dealers in the States I tried are out of stock untill early June,,, if back orders arrive.

5 3/4 inch Speaker LED from Aust distributor not due until July/August, and judging by the price of the 8700 series 7 inch, it ain't gunna happen.

7 inch Kuryakyn High Intensity LED,

    Rider, Hilly,
Many thanks for your time and effort to punch up the web addresses. Had time to decipher some of your input and I am going to research the 7" headlight change over, I know that there is no room at all for the equipment in my 5 1/2" headlight.
    Cheers guys!

Well it got here. The 5 3/4 H-D LED headlight insert fitted straight into the 2010 WideGlide, (despite what HD says on the parts site)

Maybe the Aussie imports have a different can than the Yanks, but easy as out with the old and in with the new. 2 minutes flat.

And bugger me, just went out to adjust it and no change needed.

    Low Beam LED

    High Beam LED

High Beam LED with Cree5 spots

and same again up the road a bit

    Low

    Hi

    With Cree5 spots

Sorry the pics are a bit shakey, but long exposures with a hand held,,, and it's bloody cold out tonight.

I reckon the only thing that might come close is a 55Watt HID in a real good H4 insert, but for all the ginning around, specially with a 5 3/4 headlight, this H-D LED wins hands down and has got my vote for the best I've seen.

P.S. If ya go back to the fourth post here ya can see the comparison to the fried egg look-a-likes, (H4 50/65 High performance Halogen)
