I'm a very happy Chappie!, got my Monster Ovals Slip - On's delivered today, just finished fitting them on my Road King without any problems and THEY SOUND GREAT!!. I cannot wait to hit the Hwy!!!. Next step will be a set of Dresser Duals but i think i'll wait and get some K's on the bike before i do. Thanks guys for sharing your knowledge.
Davo is right they get better and better... On my 96 c.i. Road King it made a major difference as you got closer to 5000 kms... On my 103 Ultra, the same. I ran V&H on both, and a Big Sucker air cleaner, but then when intake and exhaust are opened up your engine will run too lean. On both I ran the V&H Power Duals, and the same on my 110 cu. in. Street Glide now, but they drag as they are a bit low and below the frame. You hit a little hump on a curve and scrape chrome bad, so I am thinking on my next bike the Ultra, I will go the way you are... My Street Glide is at 5500 km since December, and just now getting looser and responsive, opened up exhaust and intake and tuner...
A little help for you Buddy: You are going to need a tuner to richen up the Fuel/Air mix, and then the low end will cackle and be far more responsive. It will make a difference as big as the header pipes do getting rid of the Cats and going to a cleaned out exhaust... This is really not optional, as it will run too lean and can hurt your engine without richening up the mix. I have the VCM (Vehicle Communications Module) for many vehicles, and they give you one with your tuner, it is a Laptop HD program required with a Tuner to do this at a Dealer. I have the IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) for other vehicles, program on a Laptop, but not the HD one as yet... Anyway, you need to do this, and they give you a VCM for your bike. Unfortunately you have a VIN lock with the HD tuner so it is a one bike one time setup... That is so they can make more $$$$ and the stock ECM (Electronic Control Module) on a Harley and little to nil Fuel / Air mix range, so we have no choice. Smart Bastards at marketing they are...
Now a little help for me Buddy? On my new Dresser coming, CVO Ultra, I am currently thinking of going the same as you are doing, Dresser Duals, and Monster Ovals. Have a look at yours, can you open up the Monster Ovals in the back to get rid of the narrow restriction? I like an opened up exaust, at least 50 mm for the 110 cu. in. even the 103 c.i. runs better with it. And it is a bit louder for "NO blind spots" heh he....
Stay safe, shiney side up Buddy, Cowboy on the Sunshine Coast....
Thanks guys, when i got the bike i had SE Slip-on's, a Heavy Breather AC and a SE ProTuner, i'm hopeful the tuner wiil all i need to richen up the Fuel/Air mix .
Cowboy, sorry mate i''m a bit of tosser when it comes to exhaust, if you mean the flange on the muffler that fits over the header pipe, the flange has splits so i reckon it will be real tight on 50mm.
SLUP, ow r ya mate,
The help I was looking for was not at the front of the muffler. the front of the muffler has a couple of splits, on top and one bottom, like most or all slip ons, and the fat clamp seals that agains the header pipe... Actually that is the only trouble I have had working on the exhaust of the Twin Cams was with having to open up those splits to get the muffler off the headers.... I ended up making a sharpened screwdriver to tap up with a hammer and spread those splits to loosen up the overlap on the header. I think that happens when someone has tightened up the clamps to much..
Anyway, SLUP, the help I was looking for was at the other end, on the tail pipe end of the muffler. It looks like it restricts down to about 30-35 mm from picture.. But around that tail end of the Monster Ovals is a series of fasteners of some kind, maybe allen or Torx bolts, and I am wondering if that back end looks like it comes off?????? I am guessing (hoping) it is like the Super Trap, and it throttles down the exhaust to rescirculate it through a series of baffles... Maybe.... Have not taken one apart. Wondering if you can help. I like to open up the exhaust and get a clean run through with about 50mm for the 110 cu. in.
On the Dresser Duals vrs Power Duals, I got an answer back from V&H and they said: "You will lose 3 horse power by choosing the Dresser Duals over the Power Duals." The Monster Ovals are 4.5”x5.5”.
That would fill up the box area underneath really well.... If I cannot mod the existing mufflers, I may go that way..
Hi Slup,
I have just got my Monster Ovals delivered and I am going to attempt putting them on this weekend. Is there anything that was a pain or needed any thing special in the way of tools and what happens to the EPA shit that is connected to the original pipes?
Hi Fatboy01, the hardest part of the job was getting the mufflers off!, as soon as I knew the Monster Ovals were going to be hard to fit onto the header pipes, I took the mufflers straight around to a exhaust shop and had them open up the flange a little, a little trick I read on other forums, once I did that they slip straight on. Just make sure you tighten the clamps REAL tight!. It's not a big job, took me about 2 hours and a few frostys to do. Mate had no EPA shit to worry about, just a straight change over. Great Choice!, Great Sound!
