I am after some advice on fitting ape hangers to my 48. Anyone have any adivce, espcially about cable lengths for a set of bars about 14-16"?

Did you get a kit? Where from? Did you fit your self? Any probs? Where and what bars do you get? Got any photos?

    Cheers

    Hey Dude,

Check out Nash Motor Co in the states.

They make some gnarly bars and kits - I think a few of the lads here have 'em.

Thanks for your advice so far guys.

I acctually couldnt work out what bars I wanted on it. So I decided to take my time with it and make that stage 3. So I purchased a side mount plate kit, springers seat in black and some SE ignition leeds instead. I all ready have a V&H shortshot staggered on it and forward facing SE high flow filter.

Now I have to start saving again for the bars and other things I want to do it. If I could work out how to put a pick up I would. hahah

LOVE the look of your bike in your profile. Is that yours? Any chance of getting some better photos? Also, what brand apes and how much did they cost you?

I have 14' apes on an Iron, really enjoy the ride and think they look pretty good as well!! Found a place on the internet call Burly Brand, check em out, they supply the entire kit including cables, wire extensions etc and have both chrome and black!

Mate I had a look at those Burly Bars. Very intresting and I might be buying off them yet. I also am going to go and see Mild To Wild Custom Motorcycles in Sydney over the next couple of days and see what they say.

But thanks everyone for your input so far. I appreciate it!

    Update...

I sore Dave at Mild to Wild Customs Motorcycles... I am either going to put on the Hurly apes or some custom made ones. I am having trouble because I like the fairly slim bars that do not come out to much at the top.

I am still working out if I want it to be a 14 or 16" set? Any thoughts????

I just love that old school look of the skinny bars. I will apdate once I have had it done... will take some time though.

Dude, I went for the 14' because I was a little concerned about the height of the bar being above the shoulder. I haven't been able to find any info to suggest that it is illegal, however have spoken to a number of people and they all reckon that once the bars go over ya shoulder height you become cop bait! I'm 5'8 and the 14' are the perfect size for me, arms are not at full reach but are stretched out long enough to be comfy rather than painful!!

    thanks 883...

I have decided on the 16". I just ordered them from Licks Cycles
    http://www.lickscycles.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=34&products_id=1850

I am still not sure of them. But I emailed them and asked for photos on bikes and they could not suply, even though there service so far has been great. I also find it hard to belive that they fit my bike with only a 5" center, but they asure me they do. So time will tell and I cant wait to get all this stuff fitted to my bike.

Photos will be put up once they do.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the info. I have to say I was blisfully unaware of all the legislation revolving around my little handelbars. However, I have decided that I am going to do it anyway. After all you only live once!
But again, thanks for braoding my harozons and knowledge.

The handle bars of a motorbike must extend at least
250mm, but not over 450mm, on each side of the
longitudinal axis of the motorbike. This measurement
does not include mirrors and lights.
The lowest part of the hand grip on the handle bars
must not be higher than 380mm above the attachment
point of the handle bars to the motorbike. Hand grips on
the handle bars must be fitted symmetrically.

So based on this,  14" apes and  a 1" riser  it would be legal in QLD.

The 380mm from seat in NSW is crazy, must be close to that stock.

    Angel

Have faith. I know they will look good. I do have to admit no one else I know thiinks so, but i do!

Not on yet and will probably take a few weeks yet because of customs etc. Also I have to wait for my other parts to get fitted at the same time. I have also now ordered Edge Cut HD grips for the bars.

I will put a photo as soon as it is all done. Got your bars yet? What bike you got?

Well I finally have them on.

I have learned a bit doing it too... Like dont use Licks Cycles in the USA. But that is another story!

The bike has already changed since this pic and it is poor quality. But this is my first photo post and has already taken me about an hour. hahahhaha.

I will take some better more recent pics of the bike and put them in the show me your sportster section later.
