Just got a question to throw out there, is the 883 Sporty learner legal?? Now before i get bombarded with statements about it would no good for me as it would get stuck in my arse cheeks, it's not for me. NO, fair dinkum, it's not for me. I said they are not learner legal, but a bloke argued with me on the weekend, he reckons they are. Can anyone shed a bit of light on this very important subject??

A 1974 350 Harley is the only one on the LAMS list

I think they are legal in the ACT only.

Yeah mate legal in ACT only.

Every Harley is legal in ACT except for the V-Rod, im Pretty Sure.

I know this because I have been doing up an old 86 1100 Sporty, and thought when I got my Ps was Legal then, but wasn't, lucky I live 30mins from the Border, and changed my Licence for a year.

Amazing how rules can change, when ACT is in the middle of another state that has Completey different regs.

A guy doing his P licence test, when i was, burnt his clutch out on his Harley, halway through the day, the Instuctor, let him go grab a Worked Dyna, and finish the test on it, couldn't believe it, he checked the Regs for ACT, and all are legal excepting V RODs.

Funny thing is the test is done, in Queanbeyan, which is in NSW and 2 different tests, in the same group of riders, 1 NSW, 1 ACT..

Also L and P do the posted speed limit, even when OUTSIDE the ACT, so 110, 100 whatever is posted.

And Ps, only for 1 year not 3, after 6 months, don't need to display them anymore, its crazy, how it can be so different.

PS Lucky for me, cause I had been getting the bike ready for rego for a while, and was devestated when after getting my Ps I learned I still couldn't ride it, even though it had Less Power to Weight ratio than the dirty old Honda CX500 I had been learning on.

Thank you to all, i knew i could count on you for help. I didn't win anything, exceplt the argument, should've put a lottery ticket on it. I got twin boys and they're getting permit next month. One wants a Hog, the other wants a Hayabusa 650. Apparently, this rocket is learner legal?????? I don't know, they both have trail bikes at the moment, i'm going greyer with them riding them around the bush

Having an 883 Sportster - why HD dont try and get it LAMS approved beats me. In stock trim they are very good bike to comfortably learn on because the power delivery is smooth, predictable and easy to judge. Add in the confidence inspiring 'both feet can touch the ground' chassis and it all makes for a good learning experience.

I have a high power bike but the 883 is a fun bike to ride because of these features. When I just want to relax, ride and enjoy, the 883 is the choice. The ZL1000 is the 'leave the arse behind' bike - fun, but you have to be concentraing all the time or it will bight, and bight hard.

it is way under the Power to weight ratio.

NSW rulings, are no Bikes over 660ml?? Which I guess is cc's?

    • have an engine capacity up to and including 660ml and do not exceed a power to weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne.

If it was a 650, would be fine, but doesn't mateer how Slow, or fast it is, it needs to be under 660ml, which was explained to me at the RTA, has to do with Novice riders, and heavy bikes?

Silly when the are so cuisy and relaxed to ride, or my old sporty is anyway.

And the piece of shit i was trying to learn on, Honda CX500, was heaps quicker, still had drum brakes, etc... was lots harder to ride, and seems as heavy, if not heavier to me, especially top heavy as the V twin arrangement is Sideways across the bike not in line like the Harleys.

CC is also used for Cubic Centimetres, albeit incorrectly.
