Hi guys.Being new to a brand new HD 96B engine in a softail, was wondering what your thoughts were to it's first oil change. In the past with my sportbikes, for peace of mind I have always dropped the oil at 500kms.I have noticed that my first factory service for the HD is at 15-1600kms.I was planning on changing the engine, primary, and trans oil at 500 kms too.Am I being too anal about this ? Is it overkill ? Would waiting until 1500kms for it's first oil change be poison to my engine ?
I would be interested to know your thoughts.......
I asked the same thing. The dealer gave me a whole bunch of reasons why I didnt need to change the oil till the 1600km service (like - modern engines dont require it) which actually made me want to do it more.
As Dave said its cheap insurance. Especially if you plan to hang onto the bike long term.
Jesus. Can't complain about the time it takes you guys to reply to a post !
I think I will follow suit.Much appreciated.
Dunno smeemn. What ever the dealer has put in it.Do you recommend going with a synthetic oil after the 1600 km service,or just stick with mineral ?
You guys are all being a bit anal IMO, a good quality synthetic oil will last a lot longer than the recommended lubricant change intervals. Just stick to the recommended change intervals and you'll be fine. Using a good quality oil should not leave shards or shavings in the oil change in a well built modern motor, otherwise there is something wrong. You guys can change your oils as often as you like with the better safe than sorry mentality, but there is no concrete evidence out there that says doing so will be any better.
