Anyone here imported the Factory HD side mount number plate kit?
Curious to see some photos of it from top down/side on etc..
Just reading through the ADR regs, Vicroad regs and looking at some photos of the factory holder.. it looks really line ball legal, the plate only has to be visible through a 90' (45 each side) arc, it really doesn't appear as though the rear tyre obstructs it all that much.
I'm wondering how much of the 'its not legal' is police not really knowing the regs..
Just curious..
Heres an example of a pic from xlforum Its really bloody close..
i'll be putting one on my bike when i get it, all i want to know is how many times can they defect the bike before they take the bike?
Andrew
I have one on my bike. Cost about $250 from the dealer. The HD web site has a 360 degree photo rotate thing that lets you see it pretty well from various angles. Illegal in Aus no matter what you say/do/measure. Looks really good but.
I love the look they give a bike. I've had one more obviously illegal on my old bike for 18 month, done over 2500K's, as you can see it is half way up the swing arm, only been pulled over twice, both times I've been let off. Been lucky to have had resinable cops. I guess my luck will run out eventuality.
Looking at getting one of these from ebay for my nightster. Have not made a decision on it yet.
Geeze.. theres not much in it.. especially with the 2010-11 models having no tail light and chopped rear guards.
This is the diagram from the ADR regs..
Its a bit rough... but..
I'm thinking if the plate can be smidged out to the left a bit, or a spacer put behind it.. could be completely legal. I don't doubt you'd still get a defect notice for it though as I'm sure most cops would just see it as illegal, but at least you'd get out of it!
Nice work with the diagram Mr Mow. The factory side mount bracket puts the number plate about one inch closer to the front of the bike than the dark black line in your diagram. It sits under the blinker/tail light, just in front of the lens. This means you would need to space the plate about four inches further rearward to be at the grey line in your diagram. This would ruin the look of it, I think.
I saw a factory one at Bathurst and also at trivett harley in Sydney better to buy from the states at the Mo with the aus$ doing so well..
Bewdy. Ordering now.
Thanks TC.
About the same. US$185 = $AU174 + shipping. Gotta love the Aussie dollar. Plus they've offered me a 15% discount for being slow to reply to my enquiry (which they weren't). Good deal. On the other hand shipping is $58, so for me with discount is around AU$215 shipped. Without discount it would be around $230. http://www.badasschrome.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=60972%2D10
Did you have any trouble wiring it?
I have ordered one from Figure Engineering on US eBay. They will manufacture to your plate size and they mount off the bottom shocker bolt. The cost was $135.00 Aus plus $38.00 freight. Reccommend you check it out.
As a foot note they also make tank lift kits
Yep I have an IRON 883 with factory side mount numberplate. you have to ensure you can read the numberplate from 60 foot back and 45 degrees either side of the bike in QLD. you can achive this by positioning the number plate about two inches away from the led light.
