Thunder slide kit issues?

    Hi All,

Could someone help me with this?

    I have a 2004 superglide.

Following mods where installed by bike shop,  thunder slide kit and a K&N filter and S&S slip ons.

Every now and then there is a pop through the carby, the bike went back to shop twice no luck in fixing problem.

Was never like this before kit put through it.

    Does it need a DYNO?

This is my first Harley and love it,  willing to do whatever it takes..

I look forward to your responses.

    Cheers

Your suggesting no to the thunder slide kit?

    So it's a tuning issue.

I am in the inner west Sydney.

    Cheers mate.

Everything I've read says not to use the thunderslide, and that most pull them out after struggling to tune with them.
When I first did my 95/cams/heads, I used the CV Carb' and fitted the Harley jet kit (jets, needle, slide spring and emulsion tube), I didn't however drill the slide as per the instructions, as I was warned not to. It ran perfectly.
I've since fitted a 42mm Mikuni, and find it a bit more responsive.

What situation causes it to pop ?

    Cheers

Well it seems to do it on take off and when slowing down at low speeds.

It doesn't happen all the time.

But I want my bike to be running at it's best.

    Your help is much appreciated.

Very helpful indeed it's all pointing to removing the thunder slide kit.

    Thanks for the attachments.

    Will sort this out.

hi, you can tune 90 % of thunder slide's  kit, if you have slash-cut type muffler's it do'es make it harder  , also if it has a kackiecan type air filter with the butterflyes opening front, ? the 1's that have tuned that work well  are very good no problem's,

I had a thunderslide years ago with a hypercharger fitted at a mates shop & dynoed in.

    Never had any probs.

Sounds like you may have to run on the dyno to get the final tune.

Eventually put a S&S carb on when they were the IN THING & reallistically found no difference between the 2 set ups.

if the bike is spitting back through the carb at low speeds it means you are too lean on the idle circuit. have a look at the size of your pilot jet[the smallest jet],if it is standard , upgrade to the next size. from memory you should fit a 45 pilot, standard is 42 i think. after doing this you will need to adjust your mixture screw again. too lean an idle mixture will also cause your bike to pop and crackle when you back off. popping etc can also be caused by an exhaust leak, usually on Dynas they suck air around the crossover pipe and muffler joints. thunder jets work alright if they are setup properly but it is cheaper and easier to modify your stock carb . we recently did a few dyno runs on a stock 98[evo] dyna. we ended up with a 10 horsepower increase by doing our own mods on the carb, fitting a free flowing aircleaner, and sealing the mufflers[SE Slash cut slip ons]. we also found tapered turbos work better on evos than slash cuts. Hypercharger test result was about 3 horsepower loss across the range, as opposed to an Arlen Ness big sucker. best result was Arlen Ness big sucker, Phat Pipes 2 into one and modified cv carb. this resulted in 12 horsepower increase. probly the difference was the 2 into one.

Yeah angry it does pop and crackle when backing off as well as the pop through the carby..I spoke to a bike shop today and he said it could be manifold gasket leaking? And the fuel mixture on carb could need adjusting.

    Thanks for you help mate.

manifold leak is a real possibilty, Dynas are famous for popping etc. yours sounds like it is still a bit lean across the board. Cow at LA cycles is pretty switched on, go see him if your in his neck of the woods.

Any work done to the motor ?
If it's a stock motor, I bet he'll say to replace the T'slide with stock.

    Thanks for all your help.

Going to give it to La cycles to have a go.
