no compliance plate attached? even though its registered now, if you move interstate or its runs out of rego I would imagine you will be in for a whole lot of pain. Things have changed from years ago so it may be different now. Also not too sure how you would go if you had to make an insurance calim with no compiance plate attached. I would research this completely before handing the cash over. I dunno mate, alarm bells are ringing.

He has the plate its just not attatched to the bike. Surely i could just get the plate attatched to the bike somewhere and it would be ok wouldnt it? Does this mean there could be somthing dodgy about it like a different engine put in the bike or somthing?

When I worked at a Harley dealership late 80's we did not attach compliance plates, it was already done when we took delivery so It is not making sense to me that the person "does not attach them on delivery" however, as I say things may have changed (as much as I doubt it) but I would do my homework on this.

Cheers Angel! Very helpful post. Guess i have some serious thinking to do. It does seem a bit sus but at the same time ive done vic roads pre purchase checks and it all checks out. Vin numbers and Engine numbers on the compliance plates match with whats on the bike and wats been registered with vic roads so it all checks out. Is there any other checks i can do to find out if the bike is legit or not or is that basically it?

The only other thing to consider if its the original frame. It could be that it was written off, compliance plate removed and engine, box etc put into another one, could also explain the low k's. just my opinion, I would continue looking.

cheer angel has given me alot to think about. I love this bike and really want it but at the same time dont want to be riding around on a bike that has been built by the owner, had another engine in it or somthing like that. Sh1ts so much simpler when you buy somthing new lol ohh well i will check ebay and try find some of the same models to compare it against and then try to make a decision from there. Thanks for all your help!

Yes as Harley Angel stated it should be stamped in the frame. HD started doing this in 1970, If original, the engine number will have matching numbers (remove 1HD1 from the VIN/Chassis ID) This did change for a short while in in 1979 where the engine number did not match. Models had engines numbered with a separate "crankcase number" instead of the frame's VIN. There were legal ramnifications to this change and HD reverted back quickly.

best bet is to look through the classifieds and see wot they are going for. i have a 98 Dyna with 50000k on it for sale for around 12 grand. 1 owner in good nick. we expect to get between 10 and 12 for it. 80s FXR could go as high as 12 grand if its a real good one but more closer to the 10s would be realistic on the east coast. keep looking mate, i reckon you will score a better buy than that one.

Kiwidave, i agree, though its got me fucked why, FXRs gotta be the ugliest bike Harley made. hate those poxy crap sidecovers on em. they do seem to have increased in price but i still reckon 15grand is outta the park . have seen fxr recently for around 10grand. mate sold an 03 Dyna superglide[anniversery] for 11 grand. its a buyers market out there with all the yank imports etc. still reckon he should look around. 15 grand will get you something better than a dirty old FXR.

He should have the full service history STAMPED then if its only done 20,ooo klm . including reciepts for tyres , there new tyres at that mileage you would think he would be probably half way through his second on the front , and not yet needing a new one ,and near the end or a new one on the back .

If there both new and he's put new ones on too sell, in which case he should have a reciept , start looking at it very hard if theres NO reciept .

OH and especially if your in Adelaide , , before you part with ANY money do the check with motor vechiles and make sure there are NO ENCUMBRANCES , cost you about 15 dollars , but can save you 15,000 dollars worth of headaches. Good luck
