Would be interested to hear any opinions on this unit and at what stage do you think it necessary to fit?

    Cheers,

    Burto.

After a bit of research on US sites, have decided that it is well worth doing so have got one on the way!

Good deal from Harley Heaven via this forum.........couldn't beat it from reliable us supplier!

I will fit it when I fit the new heads, hopefully in a couple of weeks. Also hangin on new MT8 maps from TTS. With a bit of luck it will all time in nicely!

Hey stix, I've read that you can fit by either grinding(don't wanna go there!) or loosening inner primary bolts. Did you have to remove inner primary to fit stator or use one of the above methods?

on my softy i had to remove the inner primary to put it on...that was to remove the OEM stator hub to replace with the new SE 1....do not grind

for the sake of 4-5 bolts...too easy

Thanks Crasher.......................dont worry, i have no intention of grinding!!!

I have read on US forums though, that you can remove old stator and install new one by just loosening inner primary bolts............apparently a little bit of fiddlin around but can be done.

I havent had a good look at it yet, so only relyin on what I've heard!

Fitted up the SE compensator today................Must say that it is definitely a fair bit more robust looking setup than the oem!

Anyway, just loosening the inner primary bolts didn't help as the starter motor snags on the gearbox so you can't move it out far enough!

Had to remove battery and battery holder to access the starter motor bolts, which I just loosened about 10mm...........removed the inner primary bolts altogether and then I was just able to swap over the rotors.

One thing to be careful of is when you pull inner primary away, your gasket may drop down between inner and crankcase. Watch when pulling on rotor that you don't let it snap back (magnetic) towards the stator as it may damage (pinch) your gasket. This didn't happen to me as I saw the potential and made sure that I lightly eased the rotor back against the gasket as I fiddled around trying to get it out.

After swapping the rotors it was all plain sailing fitting up the rest. I don't have the primary locking tool so I just used the old nylon rope down the spark plug hole to lock up the motor when undoing the compensator bolt and clutch hub nut. Same for tightening clutch hub.

Tightening the new compensator bolt was achieved by locking the sprocket retainer with a big shifter wedged up under the footpeg and torquing up to 140 pounds.

Have only done 30 odd kays so far, but all seems good.........more of a mental thing I think, knowing that this heavy duty unit is there absorbing the shocks of the extra power the motor is developing.

Noticed it takes a while for the primary chain adjuster to tension up again, but after a while all sounds quiet again in the primary!

Here's a link to a thread on an American forum that discusses grinding off the small 'hump' just inside the outer primary case from about 6 oclock to 11 oclock. This allows the rotor to come off without having to loosen or remove the inner primary. Note no grinding is done on the gasket seal face. Also some require much less grinding, and in some cases none at all-- don't know till you try they say.

Threads 6 and 17 show pics of the grinding needed. 'll be doing mine this way, as many have suggested in other threads on the same forum. The search function is your friend....
Also a plug to Luke at HH for pricing a new SE comp low enough that I didn't need to go O/S for it.

Agree with Burto and Stix, I put the SE Comp in my bones in combo with a SE clutch pack and certainly feels stronger in heavy take offs and you also notice it on hard roll ons.

HD puts it on all CVOs, the trikes and the 120 crate motors, says something.

It might even help protect against some the dreaded crank run out issues, well maybe !!

My apologies Macka, the 120R is not listed with the HD compensator. Certainly add it in the mix for your build, gotta help with the driveline.

Look forward to hearing how you go with it. Plan to do my 110 up to 120 one day, only need 4 parts (but all the heavy ones!!!)....

Ordered mine today. Maybe fit in over the next couple of weeks. Taking the inner primary off as well. Any suggestions on anything else that is needed if I go that way?

Well I put mine in today, although not finished as yet, just got the oil change to do.  What a prick of a job. I can understand why they say to grind the ridge away on the inner primary.  I thought I will do it properly, Starter motor out, oil tank removed, Complete primary off, put the new Comp in and reassemble.  I stopped at 8.00pm.  Finish it off tomorrow.

I am stuffed.  Knees are killing me.  Got a head ache from petrol  ( and red wine from last night.)..

Well sitting at the comp looking at the next thing to buy. HB25 the wedge. I like the idea of all the slack taken out of the chain.. When I had an old persons moment!!! Fuck did I tighten the chain tensioner bolts, I remember putting them in and then not torquing them up. Out to the bike stand there and look and look, 7.30 dark, fuck fuck fuck... I rode it today and was listening to every little noise that sounded somewhat different, bugger it take the bloody primary off again, and sitting there and remembered 24ftlbs fucking bloody shit torque. Bastard piss. Oh well, going to the pub to get a red... Kill some brain cells............ Oh and what does everyone thing of the chain tensioner I was looking at????
