15/16 ring spanner

I want to use a ring spanner rather than a socket to undo the back axle nut on the softy, so that I dont have to move the mufflers every time I adjust the belt or whatever. The problem is, I have tried three different brands of 15/16 ring spanners, the last of which is a sidchrome and they all seem to be a very loose fit compared to a socket. The socket I have is a 24mm which should be slightly bigger than the ring spanner  according to the tool shop experts I have talked to, and yet the ring spanner is a loose fit. Has anyone else come accross this problem ??

Thanks Dave, some more info worth printing and keeping.Maybe It is just normal to be a bit loose but seems a bit much for my liking.does anyone else use a ring spanner for this job??

Sorry Red, I just corrected some info I left out above, which is - the ring spanners I tried were all 15/16 so I dont understand why the 24mm socket is a tighter fit ?? It could be 12 point against 6 but it just seems way too loose for my liking. Trouble with turning the axle around is that you have to move the pipes to get the axle out when you change a tyre.
