Battery advice

Gurus, do you have to disconnect the battery to fit a trickle charger quick connector? Disconnecting my battery (and I guess all bikes of that era) triggers the alarm. Not so handy when the mechanic has to take the battery away and the only way to shut it up is to wait for the back-up battery to go flat.

And I empathise Muffin. I called in to say a quick hello to a mate last week and left the ignition on (huh???????). Two hours later, get pushing...you sure need a bit of training for that, plus hoping for a bit of the street to be down hill :)

on most newer harleys , if you look into your wiring , usually under the seat you will find a very large red or yellow fuse, turn your ignition on, pull this very large fuse , then turn off ignition, disconnect battery and replace, voila, no alarm. dont leave it disconnected for more than a day or 2.to replace, fit new battery, turn on igniton, replace fuse , turn off igniton and alarm should reset.

If you have continuity to the engine from the stator its screwed. If you don't then check for around 30 volts AC from the stator when running. If thats ok then its the regulator or the battery thats screwed.

Well you can have the volts as well as continuity. But it's the continuity that's screwed. This means the electricity being generated is going all over the bike. Not good, it will charge the battery a little but soon it will fail again. Sorry someone correct me if I'm wrong?
