Hey all, been lurking for a while, this is my first post though.

I'm looking to move across to the world of Harley. (Low K's 08 CBR600RR for sale if anyone is interested).

The problem I have is that the Sportster I want just doesn't exist!

Overall I am in love with the black denimpaint and balcked out engine of the Iron 883, but want a 1200, and I want laced wheels because I intend to get whitewalls and think they look better with spokes than with the Iron mag wheel. The Nightster is almost exactly the shape and size I want, but doesn't come in black denim and I am not a real fan of the greyed out engine, I just want black. But wait! The 48 is blacked out and spoked, but I prefer the handling of the taller front wheel.

Ideally I want a Nightster with Iron coloured engine and paint.

What is the best way to achieve this? Do I buy an Iron and do a 1200 kit and change the wheels, or do I paint the engine and tins on a Nightster?

Appreciate any thoughts and experiences on the costs of either option.

Gimme about three weeks and I will let you know, just bought the 1250 upgrade kit from USA and am waiting for it to arrive. Have a 2010 Iron, should give it a lot more get up and go!!

Welcome mate. My two cents - order a black denim Iron with spoke wheels (about $500 extra I think), then fit a 1200 kit. You can get the Iron with spoke wheels brand new - its just a bit extra. There are lots of threads on here from blokes who have done the 1200 upgrade, and there are a few options for this as well. Harley even sell a full kit aimed specifically at upgrading the Iron to 1200. You can spread the costs out this way as well, if that is an issue.

    Bro get the nightster..
    - Powder coat the spoked wheels, rocker covers.
    - Get v&h shorts shots
    - Get black progressive shocks
    It will look gangsta!

It's better keeping the engine stock...

Something I found out earlier today is that Insurance doesn't recognise the upgrade kit, so the bike remains registered as an 883, which saves on Greenslip and comprehensive. Interestingly enough, you can include it on your insurance as a 'modification' to cover the cost if you write it off, however it doesn't change the CC's for insurance purposes. Thought that was quite impressive, although I had already purchased the kit and it was all a bit of an after thought!

Sorry to Hi-Jack your thread mate, but more a question for the everyone, im sure this will also influence your decision.

    Regarding upgrading your 883 to a 1200

Will your bike be less reliable?

    Will warranty be voided?

How will this affect re sale value regardless if it is up or down in value? I guess more a question for those who have sold their bike with the upgrade. (probably not many)

I have always believed that leaving the engine stock always causes less dramas in the future, with cars anyway.
