     Howdy fellow HD Sportster riders!

I've got my bike going in next week for  its' first service.  I've looked at  this  thread previously and i'm a tad worried i'm going to get reamed on pricing.  It's going great, i've had to adjust the lever positioning on the bike to suit me and can't see how the drive  belt needds adjusting, it's smooth shifting for me so far.  I'm concerned about keeping my warranty, so realise I should get the first service done at our only Authorised HD dealer in SA, but i'm keen to look out for other good mechanics who can satisfy log book servicing for warratny purposes.

My question is does anyone have updated pricing for a first service and what should I be looking for to make sure all aspects of the service have been done if i'm paying for a scheduled service.  i.e. mark a few bolts for ensuring things like primary chain tolerances have been checked...

    Cheers all!

I dreamt for years about owning a harley, my late grand father used to tell me stories about riding them in the war. When the time finally came i got myself a brand spanking new bike, the first ever thing i have ever owned new! Time for the first service came around, a week before hand i fitted a new diamond black clutch cable. The service costed me $300, and they didn't stamp my book, just wrote in pen. I got my bike home and noticed my cable had been damaged near the neck, the clear coating was cut and water was inside the cable. I took out my invoice and noticed that the service was a generic print out that said the work carried out......included the spark plugs. (i was not charged for them) but was printed on the invoice. I called them up and the service tech asked me to email them some pictures, so i did that day, i said i will be happy to fit the cable myself as i do not have the time to come back in there. So 2 1/2 months later and a few emails and phone calls i finally get a new cable. I'm a qualified mechanic ( 16 years) , the whole process was as professional as a grease monkey running out of his back yard is my opinion. I refuse to pay a premium price for a service that is so poor. As far as i'm concerned they can get Fucked, i'll look after my own bike. As with all dealerships (cars included) they are full of lazy wanna be apprentices / mechanics who will not be able to make it in a "real" workshop. Do yourselves a favour and use the search button and you will soon see how bad they are. Find yourself a good mechanic / bike mechanic and take it there and get the service you pay for. Dont let these fuckwits ruin your dream.

Picked up the 48 last Sat after leaving it at Peter Stevens in Adelaide for the week. After speaking to Scouser I warned them if they chanrge me too much I'm going to Bikeworks and not coming back. Ended up paying $286 (also helps that a guy I used to work with workes there now). I thought that was fair but still slightly overpriced (I work for Holden and the the average 1st service is closer to the $200 mark).

They also dynoed and tuned it. Got 74hp at the wheels with V&H short shots and air cleaner.

They also quoted me up below:

The following quote is for a hi-comp 1200 motor. It includes modified cylinder heads, hi compression pistons, hi lift/duration cams, heavy duty heat stud kit, and all gaskets etc. All parts quoted are genuine Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle. The package after a dyno tune would make somewhere in the vicinity of 90-95 HP (approx).
Parts total for this kit- $1978.65
    Labour & miscellaneous- $1045.
    Total- $3023.65

I'll try and beat them up on price and maybe do it next year..... What do u guys think....

Rik, if you are serious about doing your motor, look up Hammer performance, speak to hammer dan, they are much better priced, and you will make more power. They are also active members on another forum. PM me if you want the link.

Rik, the bloke I bought my 1200 heads off did the same Screaming Eagle hi-comp upgrade with his 48, he got the whole lot done for $2400 incl parts. He dyno'ed 86.6hp.

T1 is on the money, a 1250 kit with head work, the same cams (SE575 I believe) & a good a/c & pipe should pull over 100hp if setup & tuned right.

There are several levels of head-work & cams available. Depends on what you want - all out HP, good torque or somewhere in the middle.

Guys i think you will find you can have it done by any qualified motorcycle mechanic and not void warranty and i dont mean by backyard joe and dont let them bluff you by saying it will void warranty  im sure this is bull shit  no im positive its bull shit, check with consumer affairs  if your 500k away from where you bought it your gona get over ridn it back for a service.  Even ring them and check cause i know for a fact warranty work and first services have been done at the local honda/yamaha/suzuki shop.

1600 service was quoted $350 but they only charged $291 at gasoline alley and put on a derby cover at no extra cost as they would be pulling off the original anyway .
My understanding of warranty is the same as a car you can take it to any qualified mechanic without effecting your warranty

Thanks T1, Rik, Scouser and Bear for replies.  Sounds like I should expect to pay $280-$300 for the first service, regradless of 'scheduled' pricing.  There are heaps of others who offer servcicing at cheaper rates, but I don't want to give PS any cause for denying any warranty if all the boxes aren't ticked so to speak.

The bikes filtthy (just road grime and a bit of cow sh!t) as I ride it pretty much every day and we've had buckets of rain this last week.  It shouldn't be too hard to work out what's been touched for the service, ha ha...

I read the owners manual to see what is covered in the first service and the notes are interesting reading, Note 1 says quote " Should be performed by an authorised Harley Davidson dealer, unless you have the proper tools, serivce data and are mechanically qualified." end quote, taken from page 210 of the 2012 owners manual.  So I guess it can be done by other non HD agents.....

I'll post up what I paid and what was done later next week.

    Thanks to all for replies,

Ok, got the bike serviced, before work was completed, I asked if they would service for $280, and work would be as per the owner's manual.  Normal serivce cost is $320.  They didn't hesitate and said no worries about the price.

I picked the bike up that afternoon and it was all good!  The price breakdown on the invoice lists, oil 2.5L $22.78 (gst ex), Formulua Plus oil (for transmission) 1L $11.06 (gst ex), oil filter $7.96 (gst ex), sundries $14 (whatever that is!!!)

When it came time to pay, the cost was $273.05, so less parts, the labour was about $227.40.   I figured to check the bike over as per the manual and change oils etc that would be about right.

The service staff at Peter Stevens were good to deal with, friendly etc, bike would have been washed if desired.  I didn't worry about that as it was being ridden home in the rain anyway.

In future i'll be doing my own serivce work though so i'm familiar with the bike.

BTW while there they had the 15-80% sale.  I'd only been in the week before to buy some better wet weather gear than I had and had spent over $500.  A sales guy came up and asked I needed any help.  I mentioned that I was only looking as i'd just been in and purchased a heap of gear.  He said hang on a sec, then came back with a 15% voucher to use again before September to account for the sale timing.  I thought that was pretty good service and probably will be back as there's always something......

Cheers to all for input on pricing.

Well, My bike just went in for its 1600k service today (1200 custom). Also havin Big Rad 2-2 pipes, 'Pod' filter and new mirrors put on, As well as a tune, And they (Fraser's Motorcycles, Perth) said "you'll probably get away with about $350-$360 and it'll be done just after lunch time...Around 1,2 o'clock."

They've had the bike for 2 and a half hours now. Just waitin for the dreaded phone call to say "something went wrong and we need to keep your bike in for a week. By the way, It'll cost you another grand!!"

EDIT/UPDATE: Well, It's now 2:00 and still haven't heard from them. Startin to look like the 'something went wrong' call is a probability.

Either that or the bikes done, parked in the corner, and they forgotten about you until closing time.
