Any of you engine guru's know if it can be done satisfactorily? The crank is broken off on the right hand end, drive side. People I've contacted want to see the job first, which is fair enough. Has anyone known of a crank being welded/machined and on the drive side been done successfully? Basically, CAN IT BE DONE?
You would be wasting your money attempting to repair this, it could be done at a proper machine shop but you`d be looking at $150 / hr with all the welding, heat treating and strip / rebuild, even then the tolerances may be out, i`m not familiar with this crank assembley, does the shaft seperate from the flywheel. Replacement is generally the best repair.
Got people looking in the states and oz for one, 1100 cranks are hard to come by,according to the experts. Yeah, just buy another one from fucknose where. One will eventually turn up. Mark Barnett in the states has been emailing contacts,so slowly but surely. Freight from anywhere o/seas will be expensive, a crank would be about 15kg's or more. A few leads but the people don't want to part with their "bits". It does sound a bit suss "repairing a crank by welding/machining" Lot of stress involved. Ha, even for the owner!!! I'll have a yap to Treasey and he can tell me right or wrong,he knows his shit, thanks there Hilly P:S I'm after cams too, stock ok.
I've been told 1200 Crankshafts are the same, so not such a big problem. Had a yap to Treasey and he's on the ball with all his knowledge. I'll liase with him some more and work out a solution. Cool narnies.
I think the 1100 has a one peice drive side like the drive sharft and half the flywheel is all on peice but i could be wrong. some sportsters have the drive sharft bolted to the flywheel if this is the case you just get a new drive sharft, remove whats left of the old one fit new one bolt it in. good idea to weld them as i have seen some come loose.
how do you know yours is broken? do you have the cases apart?
If you can take cases apart yourself Cow at L A Cycles Sydney can rebuild the flywheels he does Evo's & Sportster flywheel rebuilds a lot has all the gear needed. can also pull apart and rebuilt whole motor just a lot more work with sporty as gear box comes out too.
If your closer to Melbourne John Treese does them too.
i think the stroke on 1100 shorter but not much difference, the 1100 has different combution chamber in the heads i think,.
if you need a rebuild you get new crank pin new roller bearings probably new rod end bushs and big end of rods honed out then all put back together & trued.
Triumphs use car type rods & bearings Harleys have one piece male female rods with roller bearings three piece flywheels
well if you been intouch with John Treese, and your going to use friegt John would be the best Sportster man in the world today bar non Amen.
cheers
hi, the crank is a 3 peice type with the pinion shaft casted as part of the right flywheel, the old pinion shaft can be machined off & a taper machined into the flywheel with a S&S P?N 33-2325 pinion shaft, it will never brake again as the stock pinion shaft has a sharp step with no radius & can brake as i've had them repaired before but it end's up a being a full crank rebuild & balance + repair as well, try Redgrave's cycle's 02 94849900, they have helped me before on this type of repair , it's going to be a xpence sporty , why not go to a 1991 up 5 spd model they are a stronger engine to start with , the old 4 spd evo XL was the 1st model evo & had it's fare share of weak spot's designed into her from the factory as stock , if you are going spend $$$ on it make sure the g,box counter shaft is replaced @ least with the 1952 to 1983 counter shaft & 1st gear as this is the same type of weak point but when she let's go it can take the case's as well , i hope this help's some
hi, i see you might need a set of stock cam's ? i might have some as i have been repairing sporty's for since about 1980 give or take a year ,

hi, sporty cams are numbered from rear to front 1234, Q2 is number 2 cam that is driven off the pinion shaft as #1 is the rear exh , the Q cam is stock for 1980 to 85 it is the 1st pollution control type cam very mild well below mild , i have a spare geenie for pre 1982 , swingingarm i will have a look tomorrow & get back, & i have a set of original header pipes that have been rechromed like new that i need to get rid of,
hey, wayne i have a swinging-arm for a 1980 sporty + the chrome stock header pipes as well as the geenie cheer's .
hi , yes we have cams T style 1986 i set only , i have a rear mount also , whats wrong with your's is it cracked or broken ? i can help you out i wanted the ton for the cam's but seeing your on here, how's 80 that's only 20 a cam you pay for post & pack reg'd 15-20 ? ther your's, do you want a $ on the bottom repair , just a normal rebuild is around about 1400 i think you could be around close to 1800 - 2000 as a guess i can check for you if you want, they have done that model repair before,
Still got them cams mate? If ya emailed me I wouldn't have got it, puters been fucked for weeks now. (I'm using me daughters school jobbie at the moment .I will get the cams off you if their still available.
hi, i still have the cams i tryed to ring on the mobile quite a few times i could not get through , & i left a message did you recived the message ? i can send them up C.O.D. no prob's, i'am not too good on the computer ,i do not know how to PM somebody even, cheers
I would not try the repair.
You can use any early evo four-speed XL crank AND you can use an 85 Iron head 1000 crank, too, if I recall correctly.
The stroke for 883, 1100, and 1200s are all the same. 3 13/16" The only real difference is the balance done at the factory. You will have to rebalance if you use a 1200 or 883 used crank.
You can source a brand new S and S crank for not prohibitive money.
If you buy the single flywheel and the bearings to rebuild the rods, you may as well change the rod bushes and have them pin fitted. Then you have to reassemble and true the crank. The total to fix your crank will not be significantly greater than to get an S and S.
Good luck.
send truett and osborn an email, they do a repair for evo cranks, check out their website. If anyone has a fix they have.
