Thanks to advice from Hilly, AJ56, cm364352 and others from COMPLETE OIL CHANGE thread I have knocked up this PUCK and HOSE setup for oil changes on my Dyna.

In the photo you can see the 1 litre of crap oil that I got out of the motor. This would normally stay in the motor and mix with your new oil after an oil change. So what! some would say............well I would prefer to have completely new oil in my motor every time I do an oil change...... For those that are swapping from mineral to synthetic, this would be absolutely necessary I would think!

By the way, that oil has only done 3600kms and is mixed with some of the new oil that pushed it thru!

The PUCK is the old filter I took off this morning. I cut it in half, removed all the guts, shortened it and silver soldered it back together.

I then painted it Volcano Orange........ because I had some Volcano Orange paint!!

So my thanks goes to the members mentioned above.............saved me heaps compared to buying the commercially available unit.

Mate good job there, it's amazing how much you get out of the motor in the end.

I thought the commercially available scavenger units incorporated a pressure spring ,and a non return/check valve, just like an oil filter.

I would be interested to see what your oil pressure is doing while using the homemade filter job,"with the guts removed".

Dare I say the needle would be pretty limp........

You may be right HM.........but the engine is only idling and the oil is getting pumped thru to the oil return hole, so to me it must be circulating thru the engine via its usual route.

Maybe the oil pressure is pretty dismal, but it is my understanding that this is the case anyway at idle, even with the filter.

After watching the instruction video for the "scavenger" system, I can't see any noticeable difference to what happens when I used my home made version.

I have no concerns running my engine in this manner for the few seconds that it takes to clear the old oil out.

yeah, just watched a you tube clip about it, impossible with my pipes to remove the filler neck...

bugger looks like will have to buy the one at JP cycles which does it all from the filter housing... hate buying things in stead of making...

might make that one instead :)

hmm, with that Cors system on a twin cam there is (obviously) no oil going from filter to engine so im all for getting all the dirty oil out but not running parts of my donk with out oil... even for 30 seconds or whatever..

the scavenger "style" one is definately best for a dyna twin cam but yeah, I'll be stuffed if I'm gonna remove one of my pipes everytime i would have to use it

Can someone correct me if I am wrong... but just dumping the oil from say a 2010 Softail... won't that leave a full oil tank full of old oil? My understanding is that the oil is "drawn" from the oil tank, so if we don't use a method to get the oil out of the tank itself, won't the tank be still full of old oil?

Lads - I am agreeing with you re the Puck. I reckon its a bloody good idea. My question was if we DONT use the puck.. how do you get the oil out of the tank? Draining will only drain the engine right?

No I haven't yet! Still under warranty - so it goes off to the dealer.

So am I wrong? I am trying to understand and not being a dickhead?

Looking at the oil tank both the inlet and outlet are at the top right?? So how does the oil drain from it?
