Hello all. I have a 2010 FXD Superglide. The bike is 12 months old and the exhaust has broken twice. The rear cylinder header cracks where it joins the butterfly emissions valve. This is not an uncommon problem with this model however I do not intend letting it go until the warranty runs out. I believe the exhaust should last more than 6 months on a motorcycle. I spoke to HD Australia, asking if there is a long term fix on the way but they were not interested in discussing this.. The next day I was told by the dealer that HD "might not" pay for the repair under warranty because I was "stirring things up". The apparrent justification for dodging the warranty and gaurantee obligations was because they had disabled the butterfly assy at my request. Clearly an attempt at a warning/threat. There is no way HD are going to pay for this repair every six months for the next 10 years and I see no reason why I should fit an aftermarket exhaust system at my expense after spending thousands on a new Harley. The dealer offered a "double weld" repair but this was tried the first time it broke, with no success. The dealer has now 'repaired' the exhaust again but they have left the muffler hanging at an odd angle. I have now spoken to HD in the US and they stated "the area rep has already submitted this issue to our engineering dept" At least they admit there is a fault.
Thats bullshit mate they should replace the header pipe.Welding shouldn't even come into it. Looks like your slipons are off a softtail not a dyna.?
They replaced the broken header twice but it wont work. Whole idea needs a rethink by Harley. The sagging slipon is the way it came from the dealer after repairs.
Trouble here is Harley dont make the header they just buy it.Obviously these ones are faulty, welding will only make it worse.Take it back, tell them its too dangerous to ride. That exhaust could fall off and kill someone.
Just a thought ask them for a header from an 2008 model mines ok ( I hope will look tomorrow).
It has been replaced under warranty by the dealer. The photos of the cracked exhaust are prior to the repair.
Yes spanners they have replaced it twice now. My point is eventually some time after the warranty has expired I will have to pay for repairs or an aftermarket exhaust. I won't let that happen. Harley need to fix this.
Thanks guys. Keep an eye on that recall website. I will update the thread as it happens
HD US say they have identified the fault and its being looked at by Engineering. I will wait and see.
Thanks motorhead. They did replace it both times with a new header, and added a weld in an attempt to fix it. Did not work. The following is one of many similar I have found online.
"Hi, I would like to know if anyone has had problems with their exhaust cracking or snapping just in front of the butterfly valve. Mine snapped clean off just in front of the flapper valve, along the weld after 1800klms. Apparently HD know about the problem. The local guys here fixed it by removing the valve and putting in a sleeve untill HD send a replacement or redesigned part. Also would like to know if SE slip ons will fit on some other aftermarket headers eg V&H power duals or true duals"
I found the same problem on my 09 FXD today, somewhat pissed off as I had hoped to go on the Longriders ANZAC day ride tomorrow.
I pulled it off and welded it up but fuck me if I can get that stupid cable back on for the bellcrank.
I got the active exhaust cable thing back on this morning, what a head fuck that is.
at least I can go on the Longriders ride now.
Have 5000km on mine , no worries (touch wood ) , are you blokes running slip ons without the back bracket ?
no standard muffler , but i have a set of slippons to put on i know they r way lighter then factory ones maybe a weight issue is the cause yeah 1200k what a joke r these made in china now lol
Yes.
