Timing difference

    G'day all,

Not another Timing chain thread but just a couple of questions.

I am going to fit a hyd timing tensioner kit & noticed in the SE catalogue that the earlier TC's don't get the entire setup ie new timing chains because of the early motors having cam position sensors.

    Am I reading this correct.

    Cheers

That's correct, unless you use an aftermarket ignition like Twin Tec.
If you use conversion cams, I think Andrews has a rear cam sprocket with the cam sensor trigger.

Well if your not changing Cams, I'd just inspect the oil pump, and check and replace the tensioners if needed.
Also inner bearings and outer front roller if not already done.
My spring tensioners were barely worn at 30,000 kms.

WA, mine is a 2000 as well.
The new style may well provide more stable Cam timing, and I'm sure gear drive's are even better.
I doubt you would notice the difference in the real world though.

    I just re-fitted new spring tensioners .
With the Hyd' tensioners, you need the new plate and oil pump.

Yes, I did it myself along with going to 95 cube and headwork.
It's not that difficult, but you need some special tools to R & R the cam bearings, that I got from George's Garage in the US.
The price you got is probably normal from a dealer, maybe a bit high.
I think the tensioners cost close to $100 each in Aus' (or $52 in the US).
