newbie questions on buying parts O.S

    Guys

New to harleys so apologies if these are common questions.

Taking delivery of a sportster 48 in a few weeks and not much cash left over for mods.

Thinking that exhaust is the obvious one - likely screamin eagle shorty slipons

    1. The slipons are at least 100 - 150 cheaper including postage on ebay than the dealer prices.  Would a dealer install new pipes that I give them from O.S ? would they care.  Am I crazy in getting Harley to install or should I just go to any old mechanic - cheaper ?

    2. Do the addition of non standard exhaust void warranties or are the S.E units considered "factory"

    3. Has anyone installed the led fuel gauge - would be handy and again much cheaper on ebay

    4. The quote I got for whitewall tyres was almost $700, is that actually reasonable.

Because I'm new to the brand I dont want to get ripped by the dealer.  I'm still getting used to the idea Ive bought a bike sight unseen and not ridden and paid list price.

Don't forget that we do have some great local sellers. Harley heaven (sponsor). Look local first and if they are not competitive then look OS.

    Gents

Thanks for the answers and advice, I will start ploughing through those posts.

As for waiting a few more weeks to get the 48 ?, well its been ordered since December, soIi guess a few more weeks wont kill me.   I visit  Harley Heaven in Melbourne that often to look at the floor stock, they might take a restraining order out on me,

Now I just need a metalflake helmet - but will do some searches on previous  posts for that, I'm sure custom lids has come up many times.

You should be able to fit the SE slip ons yourself with a handful of tools.

I hadnt worked on a car or bike regularly for probably ten years and it still only took me a half hour.... mostly elbow grease twisting the old ones off, new ones go straight on.

Also before I did this, I spoke to the dealer saying that I wanted to add a few bits to the bike straight away, and was happy to do it myself (especially when you are just talking things like mirror flips/ pipes/ sheilds/ springs seat) as long as it didn't void any warranty. His reply....

"As long as you are lovin the new bike, go for it. If you are unsure about anything or feel you aren't up to it, give us a call and we will help you as best we can".

Get in there and get your hands dirty if you feel you have enough experience. Especially just bolt on parts that cant risk your safety.

Jonesy, from reading some posts It appears that at least one of the Aussie dealerships has been willing to try to provide more competitive pricing than has been provided in the past here in Oz.

Based on what I've read it may be worthwhile to get a few prices here and from O/S for comparison. I wouldn't mind paying a little more here to keep the $$ in Oz, but when it comes to gouging and over the top pricing-- as we can and have seen in the past here-- I happily take my business O/S.

The formula is simple-- gouging is not on and the wise shop around.

Additionally, I have bought basically everything on my sporty from O/S. The prices in AUS are FUCT, over inflated and generally just an absolute rip off! To give you an example, I am currently waiting on my forward controls to arrive. AUS they retail for $670, bought them out of the USA including Diamond Black foot and shifter pegs + postage for $500.00! Cant beat a strong aussie dollar!!

I've been buying Harley parts overseas since 1992. Mostly incredibly cheap easy and hassle free. The one time something went wrong I got a full refund and didn't need to return the part.

In contrast I ordered a part from an unnamed QLD ( I'm in Vic) dealer who is well know through their advertising. The part never arrived. The Reply from them was bad luck, no refund no part replacement. And to really help it along they said from now on we will insure all our packages. Never met anyone with that sort of negative experience from a dealer in the sates.

Just to finish the story - I have found Melbourne Harley dealers to be fantastic. it's just cheaper to buy most parts overseas.

I order just about everything I can think of (except some clothing )from overseas and have never had a problem

Followed the advice in the posts and got in touch with Luke from Harley Heaven.  His prices mostly matched and in some cases beat the O.S ones, including installation and warranty. Very prompt service, I was pretty impresed, wont hesitate to throw my business his way.

Thanks to board members to pointing me in the right direction.
