I've been watching this thread with amusement and interest. For those people that say you'd rather have a H5 than a H1, you do realise that HD is an American Company. Either way, NONE of your money is staying in Australia. Oh and newsflash HD buys it's steel from an Aussie company, so the bikes Made in America, are made with shit taken out of the ground in oz. Doesn't that make them Aussie? But I guess if your so patriotic that you want to support the Aussie businesses that are clearly ripping you off, please send your cash to octavus@illsellyouanythingifyourdumbenoughtobuyit.com.au

Now as for the American economy, they're fucked, with that sort of debt it will now take a generation to repay. The US will be downgraded and the spiral will continue for a long long long time. As such luxury items are first to go. With the now 30 million people on the dole (10M more than the entire population of Australia) when faced with the choice of having a bike or say, eating, the choice isn't that hard. Pretty soon, banks be handing out free repo'd motorcycles, like toasters...

As for the Aussie dollar, because of how much everyone outside of Australia is hemorrhaging, it will continue to climb. And hey, most Americans are dumb enough to think our gold coins are real gold anyway. Do yourself a favor, buy an import and hook up with someone like Wayne at Chopaweeza to help you get it here. I'm looking to grab three at the moment, and he's been awesome.

    Rant over.

"i hope the 2 you're selling are dirt cheap, because the arse has fallen out of the second hand market here, or hadn't you noticed"

Through the floor you say. Well then I better rethink my strategy of making a billion dollars this way and just settle for breaking even. Oh wait, I already was.

"By the time you import them and get them aussie complied you will do your arse"

Mate I'm importing bikes, not dildos.

Wow, this is terribly funny I have to say. Never thought a single post could get so controversial.  My apologies.

I dont  see the difference between aHarley imported by stealership or private. They are both imports, not made in Australia, its just a matter of how one decides to spend ones $$$. Each to there own.

    Cheers Bloodnut

By chance I was speaking with an Importer the other day - he does top of the line boats and (I think) an occasional car from the USA - and he was telling me tales of woe about people (Aussies) thinking this import lark is the quick way to riches. Apparently the 'I'll bring in a few bikes/cars/boats to on-sell' is very common amongst the Aussie male and has been for a while - three years at least, so there's nuthin' new in that!

But this bloke does it for a living and he's amazed at how many people have done their dough - or rather having a looooong wait to on sell - on account of the proliferation of imported toys from the US in particular.

I've done the personal HD import thing but only for me - I have no intention of selling it. I needed a 'new bike' (2nd hand actually) and the US prices were ridiculously cheap with all costs considered. I just love Harleys and here was an opportunity to own another for half the Aussie going price!

No greed intended, meant or implied!

But also beware the Tax Man if ya importing and on-selling too many bikes. Neighbours and busy bodies have dobbed for lesser things...

Greedy Bastards = Entrepreneur = Tall Poppy ready to be hacked down by those with a different mindset

Market forces determine the "sale value" of something - personal attachment determines the "private value" - if you never sell you never lose money ....

"Greedy Bastards" know that if no one wants to buy widgets in one country and widgets are really popular in another country .all they have to do is  jump on a ship and go to the place where they are plentiful and bring it back to the place where they are scarce and/or expensive.... been going on for 1000's of years....

Some "Greedy Bastards" that come to mind... Sir Walter Raleigh + Tobacco ....  Marco Polo + Noodles (No Victoria spaghetti wasn't invented by the Italians...)  the Dutch East India Company  + spices, ... Frasers + Ducati/HD....

Seriously ... it's like reality TV ... if you dont like it - turn it off ... if you dont want to buy a grey import - Don't ....  simple -

Tthere will always be someone out there that would LOVE to own a harley ... any harley ... even if the only thing they can afford is a purple 883 with a pink seat, 10"apies with tassles hanging out the end that no one else wants....... so it is being sold cheap ... does it matter to him/her if it is H1 or H5 ... Fuck no  it is his her first harley and s/he's going to be over the moon that it is affordable...

Let's all get over pissing on each other ...there are enough cops and cunts in cars out there doing that already  so lets all hold hands, hug , sing Kum-by fuckin-yah and get over what some bloke might or might not do with his own money, balls and brains.

Hi just to let you guys and your self know that i have purchased a 07 Night Train from a dealer in PA USA on August 12/2011 and it was shipped on the 25/8/2011 from PA USA to CA USA  Cost to me $785 US.

My bike has arrived in Queensland on 22/9/2011 and paid for shipping cost to me $1000.

On The 24/9/2011 my bill had come from INTER PORT CARGO SERVICES for the amount of $1,608 for the GST and Inter port duty.

26/9/2011 My bike is in Queens land imports for compliance. The bike must be stock standard for compliance as i require exhaust system standard mirrors and complete head light Assembly extra costs to me on top of the compliance between $2,500 to $3,000 thy say + the supply and fit of the extras that i have mention. Bruise had told me it will take 1 month for the compliance tag to be processed.

Estimated time for my bike to be in my hands in Melbourne light November to Early December.

The ? is. Is it Worth it ?

Well in my experience to all this bullshit. NO Unless you buy the bike relay i mean relay cheep Then Yes go for it as i Believed i wood have saved money by going this way. Well not in my Cass.

A lesson for me to learn.

                                              Regards Manny.

    Hi Manny

Im using choppaweeza to import my bike. At present it has just left USA. So far iv had no problems. As yo say the bike must be stock standard, make the changers you wish to after the bike in your hands. Also compliance chargers are all are around the fee you paid for, depending on the bike

Once you get the bike in your hands, you should be feeling ok you went through this proceedure.

    Regards

In the interests of some learning happenning here.

Purchasing a from private sources in the America can cost you more. It sounds like the price you paid for freight private bike in America was way too much. This is part of what you can be exposed to when you do it yourself, retial costs.

Compliance costs. The current rate is no longer $2500.00 - try $1900.00

"My bike has arrived in Queensland on 22/9/2011 and paid for shipping cost to me $1000" About right.

"On The 24/9/2011 my bill had come from INTER PORT CARGO SERVICES for the amount of $1,608 for the GST and Inter port duty." GST depends on the purchase price of the bike. Customs fees can be $250.00 processing.

"26/9/2011 My bike is in Queens land imports for compliance. The bike must be stock standard for compliance as i require exhaust system standard mirrors and complete head light Assembly extra costs to me on top of the compliance between $2,500 to $3,000 thy say + the supply and fit of the extras that i have mention. Bruise had told me it will take 1 month for the compliance tag to be processed". It pays to purchase or accept offers for as standard a bike as possible. Your risk of being charged excess fees on top of the standard fees are greatly reduced.

Note to all: There are reasons why you should do your homework before entering these types of transactions. Also there are reasons why those doing it all the time do protect you from paying too much.

Manny, at the end I hope your bike arrives to you in a good state ready to register!

    Wow what a long read!

I see a lot of happy imports and a few mishaps.

I am wondering how stock your bikes have been as generally no haley remains 100% stock for long which is part of the attraction.

Forget OCC style jobs obviously. But what about small things like aftermarket forks, or other billet bling, controls, etc.

What sort of upgrades are acceptable without any second look what so ever.

Also I know of a local guy who went did the USA road trip and bought back 2 Bikes, sold one straight off the boat. Reakons The whole deal broke even. So including the holiday to USA importing 2 bikes and selling one for cheap (Aus Market) he cam out even which he is petty happy with and intends to do another road trip next year and repeat the process.
