Bikes must be second hand and previously registered in the US; no new models. I'm told the latest we can bring here, as of writing, is the 2008 models. The 2009 model can be brought here after May(?) 2011.

That's what I was told by an Importer; can anyone confirm or refute?

What?! Really? So therefore a US import will be valued higher and premiums lower - are ya sure? Am I understanding you here? I'm importing right now so I might start phoning for quotes and sus this out. seems odd...

Thanks for the timely info Ozroder; my import bike is only days off being collected from the Dealership in Texas so I've cut & pasted that big chunk of 'clean the bike thoroughly' and sent it to the Dealer. Much appreciated!

I'm in the process of importing a 2010 Fatboy Lo with 4,900 miles on the clock. Picked it up from a HD dealer in Florida and with shipping to the agent in LA cost me $16,000 AUD. The bike is being imported by Qld Imports and they do everything including all the paperwork & compliance. I get the bike delivered to my door & then registered for $21,500 total. That's with new tyres, brake pads, headlight, fluids etc. Bike left the US yesterday and should be here in a month

Good one lordoss; is that about $10K savings in round figures? Sensational! Better hurry people coz they'll plug the 'loophole' if too many people do it! Well, it's not really a loophole but ya know what I mean.

I imported my bike myself - an '87 model to make life easier for rego purposes - and it was pretty straightforward.

The thing that really surprised me was when it turned up it was oily and had the battery still fitted - plus was full of fuel ! It was in a crate though so would have been hard to check.

Does anyone know if a 49 state model is fine to import, or do our emissions need California delivered bikes?

i bought a 2007 night train, from Dixie Cycles in Pompano Beach FL (Coop there is a great bloke very helpful) for $9600, i used geezers & QLD imports to bring it over and do the compliance and Bikenuts to bring it to my door

no dramas really, my bike had custom pipes so QLD imports had to stick a set of factory pipes on it , as well as new tyres, but they gave me the custom pipes & tyres, all in all pretty happy with all involved, the only mystery i have at the moment is that i am in NSW and i am unsure if i require a WeighBridge ticket or not, guess i will find out next week when i take it for a blue slip, but it has the RAWS authorised import on the body and i have the approval certificate from the govt.

for what its worth, i wouldnt look at importing a bike myself, way too much stuffing around, if your gonna import, use someone who does it all the time, thats for post 1989 , pre 89 i would do it myself :)

if anyone knows if i do actually need a weighbridge ticket that'd be awesome,

oh & PS: my bike is sick :)

I have just got my softail from Florida Via geezers, they tell you up front he costs, And they can bring in late model bikes. If you can buy the bike at the right price then you will save heaps. It cost $700 across US, about $1450 across ocean, $440 qld to melb, conversion $3k, bought the bike in Dec, had it for 4 weeks now. all paperwork done and bike was ready for RWC and rego.... Phil

    Hi all,

I just imported my Softail Deluxe and it arrived last night, after buying it the first week in January.  I used a mob in Qld whom I wont name at this time, for obvious reasons below and what may come to light.

When the bike was unloaded at my place, I attempted to start it to drive it up my (steep) driveway but the battery was flat.  Lucky the guy that transported it, helped me push it up.  Anyway, started looking over the bike that was still covered in dust and found that the poil tank was bone dry.  I rang the importer this morning and they state they never drain any oil, check the oil, fill the oil or even start the bike.  I said that I thought it was requirement to drain all fluids and was told "NO.  If that was the case, that's all we would be doing filling up oil".  I asked what would have happened if I started the bike and it seized and was then told it would be my fault.  This doesn't sound right to me and I am going to check the bike over before I replace (service) all the oils and plugs.  Now I have read what Chopaweeza has said in his posts and feel that this mob (Qld) has got it wrong. Where would I stand if it did seize.  If you want to know whom the importer is, PM or email.

In addition, I paid for cleaning of the bike at the dock and there is still dirt and cobwebs on the underside of the bike.  I think some importers are taking our money and not living up to their part of the deal.

    Not happy :-(

    OK, prices.

$1000 Shipping from California to Qld
$1300 - 10% for GST on bike price and shipping
    $2500 for Compliance
$350 for Cleaning etc at docks
    $400 Qld to Sydney.

Give or take a couple of $$$$$$

But I'm not going to recommend the mob I used.

They changed tyres. brake pads, brake fluid, headlight, speedo(to kmph) reat indicators ( were red) & 1 or 2 other things...as i said conversion is a set price & that includes paperwork.. cost me extra $500 with legal exhuast and mirrors so bike was roadworthy on arrival to my door.If you want to save money then importing from US is way to go as prices here are double of there for same or lesser bikes.

so your choice is spend more here or buy there and pay the costs to convert and still save...

I have read all these posts and as far as I can recall, I don't remember reading if it was possible to import Brand New "bikes" from a US Dealers Showroom floor.

I did notice in chopweez gudielines that he only does bikes 2 years an older.

Maybe I have missed this explanation but can we do brand New?

I was looking into this at one point and was told that the bike had to 'have title', which means that it had to be registered to someone.  As far as I understood there was no restriction on age or milage so if 'a friend' bought one and registered it in their name - and then never used it - it should be okay to bring over as long as it is a model that is on the list.
