I work in an industry where there are alot of Slippery Flim Flam operators that couldn't find their bum with their hands let alone import a bike . When it goes wrong they just stop answering the phone & emails and the client is left thinking their bike has vanished into fat air . When people call me it's often to just vent about how someone else has dudded them so I use their loss to help make my business better . I take notes of what went wrong , how it could have happened and then work out how it could have been avoided . These sort of things have made me tweek my methods , it makes you tighten up your processes & constantly re-assess how you can do it better .

Well my 2010 FatBob arrived during the week.
Got on for my first ride yesterday (dead battery) and i could not be happier.
While the wait was long, the bike is exactly what i wanted and thought i was buying.
I cant thank Chopa enough for his help with buying, transport and compliance and his network of guys who just got the job done with no fuss at all.
I did save what i think is a substansial amount of money (my figuring is around maybe the $6K mark) and it was worth the wait.
I would recommend Chopa's services to anyone who asked me in the future.

Bugger me though, it started to rain heavily today so i couldnt toake her out for a ride this morning.

I'm not overly fussed either way, if you like it buy it! Who really cares where it comes from?

The thing I find interesting is that they're all over priced in the end anyway. For example, you buy a bike spend XXXX on it and 3-5 years later you're losing 35% + on your original spend. It doesn't really matter where it came from; you'll end up with the same outcome...................bike is worth what the market is willing to pay and nothing more. Point being that if you can get a great deal on the bike/car/boat/fuck anything that you love - do it, cuz chances are you'll lose your shirt over it shortly after!!

I'm off on a bit of a tangent @ the moment but there was bloke on here a few weeks back selling a Fatboy that he had spent in excess of $35-38k from memory; 2 years on and he was trying to punt it at $22k or there abouts (dont quote me on these figures, they're not exact).................not sure about you blokes, but I cant afford to throw away $15k + so I'll always look for the more price palatable option, if its from O/S, local etc than brilliant. The only thing I have noticed on a side note is that most of the imports that are being flogged at the moment are priced comparable because the market appears to be saturated with bikes, they're fucking everywhere!!!

    My 2 cents!!

P.S - Funnily enough, I think I started this thread when I first joined the forum. Bright eyed, busy tailed and ready to save a fortune but by the time I went through the motions got some quotes the savings weren't that great. Makes sense if you're after some limited edition bike that cant be bought or you just cant find it locally but horses for courses!!

    ' Grey imports 1HD V Aussie 5HD "

I can quite clearly see both sides of the fence here.

On one hand , I can't get a decent offer on my one owner "Aussie 5HD" 2008 FXSTC Softail Custom ( mint bike !) due to the flooding of the Perth market with with "grey import 1HD's". That's the market from here on in , and luckily i don't HAVE to sell this bike , ( I'd be forked if I did !!)

Lots and lots of those Yank imports are well rough , but still have had a huge detrimental affect on the residual price of " Aussie from new " bikes !

On the other hand I also have a 2008 FXSTSSE2 CVO Softail Springer , a "1HD" out of Texas , one owner mint bike ( like new actually !)

Now I would / could NEVER have bought that bike new here in 2008 at $58 K as an "Aussie 5HD" ( Frasers Perth only ever sold 2 FFsake !!)

So for me at least , the grey import scenario has been a double edged sword , both obvious good and bad points , and has changed the used HD scene in Australia for ever.

I for one will NEVER buy a new HD in Australia again , and I've bought many over the last 18 years. Why would you ?

There's a bloke that has a shop close by that inports HD  bikes sell them cheap an a shit load of them but seriousley if most people had seen what these bikes looked liked when they got off the boat before the dealer cleaned them up you would haft to be crazy to buy one they buy the cheapest pieces of shit an service then give it a cut an polish an dump it on the show room floor an hope some poor bloke that dosn't know too much about the bikes comes along, personally i was almost going that way then i thought i must have rocks in my head to buy one when it might be cheaper then the blokes around the corner but what it dosnt cost you up front it will later down the track!!

When I imported my bike she had 380 miles and the bike was like new. It took a while to find a nice one and trust the seller. That was 2 and half years ago and still over the moon with my bike. One reason that I imported was the Aussie harleys were to much then, this was before the prize drop. I saved close to 6 grand and was not interesed in a metric cruiser. There are lots of good buys here and over there and the best think we are free do to what we want.

the gap between H1 and H5 has narrowed to the point it's not much of a deciding factor to many. Like Wayne said. Klms and condition first. Then the best priced of these bikes sell.
What surprises me is the relatively little consideration for bolt ons. Many will put a lot of effort in to get a bike down a few bucks or be really annoyed when an import is sold cheaper than there bike. Yet we are happy to spend $20,000 or more on upgrades and not blink. There is a saving when buying an import but by finding the right import with the right mods can double or triple your saving. This goes for H5 also.

the bike I am looking at are 440k here, in the States they are $20 to 25K including compliance/ADR
so I might buy two, sell one and have a very inexpensive bike

Good luck with that , but I think " it's been done already" mate .

A "private" importer here in Perth brought 3 CVO's in, sold the first over a year ago for  "good profit " ( made 10K he reckons !) .

Sold the second after 6 months and only just got his money back.

Still has the 3rd and it's going nowhere fast and it's now a full 16 months older than when he started !

Some of the "grey imports" for retail sale in the eastern states have been so for a full calendar year now as well

So be careful of that thought mate , I looked long and hard into it and decided agin' it .

PS What bike is 44K here and 20 to 25 over there ? Sounds like a CVO Breakout and they're NOT 20 K over there !!

You might be one of the lucky one's i bet theres alot of blokes out there with broken harts that have been scammed by importers ive personaly seen some off these bike when they have arrived to the work shop straight from the states in such bad condition an then looking half decent with a clean up an maybe some paint but if some ones not looking after the duco of the bike it dosnt say much for the running gear an as for being insured for 26k i bought a bike recently for $12,250 thats insured with shannons for 25k bought here in Australia so it is possible to find good bikes here with service history ect, for a good price you just have to find the right person!!

.....................You get what you pay for thats what my Father told me an thats what his father told him, importer's are there to make money not friends's.............

I bought a 2006 Heritage 18 months ago for $10,000 in Delaware. It cost me $800 to get it to LA for shipping. Another $6,600 for shipping, compliance, GST and rego and sold it this week for $15,500. Don't tell me you can't lose. The bargains in the Harley market at the moment are the grey imports that blokes are finding difficult to sell. The bike was pristine with 6,000 miles on it. These days you really need to pick the right bike and buy it cheap. Did I mention the holding costs?

I looked at a very clean 2007 CVO Springer today on the Gold Coast , at Morgan and Wacker ( on holiday with the family )

    2 owners . 6,800 K's in Amarillo Gold.

A 5 HD bike , sold new in Brisbane

    $29990 , at retail from an HD Dealership ! ( 58 K Aussie dollars new remember !!)

That's the market today, and $5K less than the home dealers AKA " entrepreneurs" are asking for all those grey import CVO's on Bikesales

From an HD dealer with full Aussie history and warranty to boot !!

The imports have changed things around allright , but it pays to do your homework BEFORE you buy !!

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/biztech/apple-microsoft-and-adobe-forced-to-testify-before-parliaments-it-pricing-inquiry/story-fn5lic6c-1226575424795#ixzz2KZnjpDZE
APPLE, Adobe and Microsoft have been summonsed to appear before the Government's inquiry into the price of consumer electronics.

Got want to know why we pay so much more for electronics compared to the rest of the world.

i want to know why i cant buy a new Dyna for 10k like in the US.
