agree with chopa re craigs list. bit more time consuming with the searching but some of the deals on there will make you cry.

edit :  or laugh if your buying.

There is no doubt that Chopaweeza is the man when it comes to importing motorcycles from the USA. Coxy has provided some really good advice. The web site killerchef is referring to is www.searchtempest.com it does allow you to search multiple craigslist cities at one time. I use it all the time.

We use www.funtransport.com for freight within the USA. They specialize in motorcycle transport and they automatically insure the bike for $15,000. If you want to purchase additional insurance it is very reasonable (around 2%). Bikes on the east coast (New York, Florida etc.) will cost about $700 - $800 to get to the export agent Choppa uses in Los Angeles. Their phone number is +1 390 694-4500.

Be aware that other / regular freight carriers provide basic insurance by the pound / weight of the bike at around $20 per pound.  So if your bike weighs around 800 pounds the insurance on the bike is about $1600. If they drop or lose your bike the insurance will pay you $1600. IF you use another freight company make sure to ask about what will happen if they damage your new bike! They usually offer additional insurance at a cost of about 2%. An additional $15,000 worth of insurance will cost around $300.

We have been in the motorcycle business since November of 2000 and have a shop in Concord California a suburb of San Francisco. If you find a bike on Craigslist in the San Francisco area we offer an inspection service for $150. We will provide you with detailed high quality pictures and video of the bike running etc. We will also provide a detailed report of the overall mechanical and cosmetic condition. If there are any scrapes, scratches, dents or mechanical issues (oil leaks, worn tires etc.) with the bike you will have HD quality pictures and video to allow you to make a truly informed decision. FYI, I do know how to use my camera and put it into macro mode to get non blurry close up images of even the smallest scrape / scratch and the video I take is HD quality.

Feel free to email me at Michael@USmotorcycleSales.com if you need additional help or advice.

Toodyay , about 100 K's due east of Perth

Quite a pleasant run on the bikes for brekky

Popular with bikers for a "local" run , making part of a 300Km day run for us at least

I was there just two weeks ago

Nice wee country town with 3 pubs !

I looked at this also and  didnt go down the path of importing one, the cash you save is not that great after everything is sucked out, plus a big factor which i was told just recent is all harley dealerships have made a pact to refuse to work or deal in any of them, if this is not true  let me know.

What IS true is this Re the "savings" on buying a "grey import" OR a 5HDI vin numbered bike.

If you're after a specific / rare model , it's still a good option with "savings" to be found.

For a more regular type bike , the savings now would be marginal.

Why ? The market in Australia is WELL saturated , and if you're bringing in a bike to " make money" on it then good luck with that.

Some grey imports have now been for sale here for over a year , CVO's in particular that I have been watching

    When I was looking into a CVO Springer , I found a 2007 bike with 50 miles ( 80K's !!) on it in Victoria , ex USA " private collection "

The private importer AKA " entrepreneur " who had brought it in purely for re-sale offered the bike to me for supposedly only  " $1500 over his landed cost " . He gave me a breakdown of all his costs and they all checked out

It was not my first choice of model ( I really wanted a 2008 with the wider front wheel !) , and it had had NONE of the CVO recalls done !!

Eventually he sold it to a used Harley outlet in Victoria ( for less !!) , who still had it on bikesales last week FFsake ! I suspect strongly he did not even cover his costs 100%.

I bought a lovely one owner 6,300 mile 2008 CVO Springer , ex-Texas bike already in Perth. Complied here after I first REALLY checked it out.

Probably as a function of the current market , and a wee bit of luck, persistence and knowledge on my part I had that bike registered in my name and "stamp duty paid" with a year's rego for WAY WAY LESS than the 2007 with "50 miles" from the " entrepreneur" I've just mentioned above !!

Could I have bought a 2008 CVO FXSTSSE2 cheaper in the US and landed it here as a personal grey import , PROBABLY NOT !!

Sight unseen purchase would have been a close run thing and i would have paid out most of the cash 4 months ahead of getting the bike !!

Flying to the US to look at bikes , well forget about it , that would have made the bike dearer than I paid for sure.( Woulda been FUN tho' !!)

A mate of mine here in Perth has just landed a first edition "Anodised" V-Rod with 1,300 miles, LIKE NEW , from Las Vegas , and he could not have bought a bike in that condition here in Perth for his landed / complied / rego'ed cost , so it can still be done. ( Rare/ specific model again !) . And he bought that bike in a Harley dealership while on holiday !!

This is the model I bought , ( Harley brochure photo !)

Yeah, spot on Retroman, if you are bringing in a bike to compete with dealers...well good luck brothers, cause they do it better, buy cheaper and have back up services that you simply cannot compete with.

The savings I made were at the high end market with high end extras fitted, and the bike is not for sale at any price, and I did my homework, so in my boast, I have not factored my trip to the States, nor the heaps I spent while there....(not sayin on what) wow, what a holiday....however if this is to be taken into account....the savings are modest...so on a less expensive model, you would need to do your sums...for instance a Sportie etc.???, but this has been pointed out previously by Chopaweeza.....

BTW...awsome looking beast Retroman.....what colour is she???
  • Retroman
    Retroman

    Jacks

The colour is CVO " Black Diamond / Smoked candy Flames "

Only available in the CVO of course , and only for one model year.

I really REALLY did my research and for sure I could not have brought one direct myself for much if any less.

I was at Daytona bike week March 2011 ( shit almost 2 years FFsake !!) and came back FULL of intent to import a bunch of CVO's .

Had a wee bout of "scary health scare" not long after i returned from Daytona , so that put paid to that idea

Woulda been the first guy in Perth to get it done , and it would have been a good gig. First few "dudes" were able to get " Aussie money " for the bikes.

2 ( already !) well rich Perth guys of my direct acquaintance brought batches of bikes and were making $10K per bike , no joke ! 18 months ago now that was.

Selling them from the house as "off the radar dealers" effectively , before HD dropped Aussie prices AND before the present saturated market !

( I saw several other pigs of CVO's that had obviously been US finance repos , brought in batches by " home dealers " ).

Not so now , the market has changed and Perth is saturated with import repos. Some of them are very ordinary bikes indeed, not good !

This 2008 CVO Springer came in thru' a Yankee car/truck importer , each container with a truck and a nice clean Harley , all from Texas.
