Howdy, Just introduced myself to this site and i'm already asking questions! I have an 82 FXB Sturgis that has done approx 90k miles and needs an engine rebuild. I plan on a full rebuild given mileage. I understand from other similar posts that John Trease is the guru on this side of town (northern suburbs Melbourne). Would appreciate his contact no. if anyone has it. Cheers. Dutchy.

G'day Dutchy, posted this in the intro's Forum.

    Welcome Dutchy,

Looking forward to the pics. I remember the 82 FXB well, the brand new shipment was in at Burglars & Stealers and I drooled over the FXB and FXWG while waiting to take delivery of my humble 1981 FXEF. The FXWG was 8,500 at the time and out of my league, but my 81 and I had a long time together (20 years) and got to know each other very well.
Kiwidave might read this post and give you info on Trease.
    Cheers,
    Cris.

    Thanks Kiwidave,

Sorry to disapoint but its the more common black and orange colour scheme version. I too rate the brown and gold colour scheme but they appear to be very rare.

Thanks for the PM and check yours.

    Pix arriving soon.

Thanks Cris, Kiwidave has delivered. The FXB is my dream bike and i finally found one about two years ago in Tassie. Saw it, flew down, rode it, bought it and rode it back. Always knew a rebuild would be required at some point as it has seen a lot of use. Nonetheless we've had two good years. Its pretty intact and relatively unmolested. Will get photos up soon.

    Onya Dutchie,
    Brings back memories, good pic.
Only other dif from bog stock I can see is the forward controls, and the
stupid extra oil lines to drain the top end. (most shitcanned those pretty quick.)
Original had mid mount controls and highway pegs.
Have you got the 82 fender badge?
    Cheers ,
    Cris.

    Well spotted Cris,

Original mid mount controls are now back on. The forward controls on it were terrible. Looked like el cheapos or backyard job. And yes it still has the fender badge. Have started stripping bike and will post more pics as i slowly tear it down.

Here is bike stripped. Have confirmed crank bearing has worn beyond acceptable tolerance and all the usual top end work looks like its required. Bike has simply done too many miles!

    G'day Dutchy,
Have a look here, you may find something to download.

Also, have a look at re-wiring while she's stripped, remember it's nearly 30 years old
and I'd replace circuit brakers just in case too.
    Cheers,
    Cris.

I agree with Dazza about doing a full restore, I found it great enjoyment.

Thanks Cris, found some gems in your treasure trove!!

Just one point, take lots and lots of photos, You can never take too many, and it will be a great help when working out how to put it back together! I even took photos of screws, wires etc.

That's a very good idea Troy.

I wish I'd done more pics when I rebuilt the Evo,

mainly cause early onset Dementia has taken it's toll.

Good advice all round. Thanks. Have been taking some pics as i go. Now i am a bit scared i havent taken enough. I am a bit obsessive about  storing  and labelling stuff as i go , so hopefully i have enough reference points.

hi     if you look up the frame & engine number in the front page of the factory manual i think you will find that she is a 1980 -81 model sturgis ,              i have a 1980 model  myself , black.   the late 1981 - 82 is in the gold colour ,  cheers  the 1st black model has a factory 2 into 1 exh system ,              i have a spare  s/hand set for sale if you need them ?

I have checked and double checked frame number, h-d manufacturing sticker/plate on frame (still partly intact!) and australian compliance plate. The frame number is 'C' coded for the manufacturing year date, which my service manual says is 1982. The h-d manufacturing plate is stamped 3-82 suggesting March 1982 construction. The australian compliance plate is stamped 5-82 suggesting it was complianced here in May of 1982. I know a lot of stange things happened at h-d around the time of the changeover from AMF so it could well be 1981 stock, 're-branded' for colonial consumption . I donk really know. Anyway all i know is it is definitely identifed as 1982. More importantly i love it regardless.

Thanks for the offer on the 2 into 1 exhaust daddy, but i will pass as i see kiwi dave may want it. All yours Dave!

Waiting on John Trease to do engine bottom end and valve reseat etc. He's currently at Lake Eyre for a speed run on one of his machines.....great bloke, very knowledgable and has a workshop to die for.

Thanks again for all the help. Dutchy.

     G'day Dutchy,

Apart from the correct frame numbers, compliance plate, VIN etc, you have the badge, and only the 82's had the front fender badge.

    Cheers,

    Cris.
