Just thought I'd get some idea's from people in the know with an issue I had today.
Bike died in the arse sorta. Cruising along on a forum ride today and the bike just died, didn't run rough or anything before hand just died. Pulled over, Slip and Davo hung around (appreciated) for a few minutes and she pretty much fires up again as if nothing happened, sweet. No, about 5km's down the road same thing again, died wth no warning of any description. 3 or 4 mins later she fires straight up again ride another 5 mins same thing again.
As luck would have it I made it to a servo, checked oil, bit low so threw a litre in thinking it could be a sensor problem. We all take off and 5 minutes later she died again. Rode it back to Kyogle and left it there for which Davo generously gave me a lift all the way back to the Goldy.
Anyway, anyone know what could be the issue? Anyone experience this problem before? We are all thinking it's a fuel problem.
Cheers.
EDIT: forgot to mention I have a Mikuni carb on the way, should be arriving tomorrow.
Fuel tank not venting or vent valve stuffed causing fuel starviation
Well first thing to check is look for dirt in float bowl.
then next thing would be pull the fuel petcock off clean the mesh that stops dirt or crap see if it has dirt build up. , if your useing a stock vacume petcock i would convert it to normal ( not vacume shut off ). i don't mean buy a new petcock just convert it as more reliable, sounds like could be fuel starvation. if not would be elevtrics.
good luck
It looks like it could be your battery and or charging system, if the battery voltage drops the ignition will drop out, check the condition of your battery and the output of your regulator, ie put a meter across your battery terminals and read it then start the bike and do it again should be about 14.5 volts when running, Try everyones suggestions before fitting the new carb .
Just be careful on electrical switch gear with--WD-40.
A WD-40 film attracts dust and over time this will create a electrical barrier ie; switch will stop working.
I've got stock Coil on my bike, been there since feb 01 80,000+ hard k's no prob.
I would look at the switch & would also check the carb has no dirt in float bowl as this is normally easy to check out just remove foat bowl & look. if no dirt, take fuel line off at carb get a tin, then turn on the fuel see if it's flowing strong from tank, if not there could be your problem. if good fuel flow & no dirt showing, check your high speed jetting it might be lean.
also if it's electric, it will cut out quick like a shut off, if it's fuel starvation it will just seem to loose power.
could also be a wire eathing out somewere
Deadwood, best thing m8 is to pull the guts out of the vacume on off and convert the petcock to manual on off, as if you ride hard when vacume is lower it can restrict fuel flow. the stock petcock can flow enough fuel to make good HP.
i converted my stock petcock to manual a long time ago.
Might run that past the guys tomorrow while they have the carby off. Thanks for the hint Krash.
