    Riders call for proper facility

    05/Feb/2011

Local motorbike shop owner Paul Markham says the Hills needs a purpose-built facility.

FORRESTFIELD bike shop owner Graham Markham believes it is only a matter of time before an off-road motorbike rider is killed or seriously injured in the Hills, unless a purpose-built facility is approved soon.

Mr Markham, who sells thousands of bikes every year through his business, says the majority of his customers openly admitted to riding illegally on trails and in national parks.

But he said he does not blame them.

Instead, there should be a purpose-built track for riders in the shire, he said.

“There are known areas where you can get away with it,” he said.

“Because there is no facility, you are forced to find places to ride where you won’t create havoc.”

Mr Markham said he had tried to set up a track in York, but his proposal was rejected.

“It’s a case of ‘banana-ism’,” he said. “Build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything.”

He called on local government to help provide a solution.

Shire of Mundaring chief executive Jonathan Throssell acknowledged there was a problem with off-road motorbikes being ridden illegally in the shire.

“We have looked at all the land we manage and found none suitable for use by trail bikes due to the size required and the concern over a potential track’s proximity to local residents,” he said.

“Land which may be suitable for these activities within the shire boundary is managed by DEC and the Water Corporation.”

A community forum on March 1 at the Shire of Mundaring administration centre will address the State Trail Bike Strategy.

It will run from 6.30 to 8pm and give an overview of the strategy.

The public will also be able to ask questions about the strategy and issues around recreational trail bike riding.

RSVP by February 23 to 9290 6682 or scss@mundaring.|wa.gov.au if you wish to attend the forum.

Yeah well while the land keeps getting raped to build houses the riders keep getting pushed further and further out. In the good ol days you could ride along the beach in Warnbro & Rockingham. Camping in the bush and motorbike riding was great for miles along the beach. But these days all you see is houses. No bush anywhere. Well no bush you can ride in locally.....

They dont allow trail bikes in the bush because of the damage to the bush, then in a few years they bulldoze the bush for houses anyway?
