Was under impression wide glide had 41mm forks while forty eight has 39mm same as standard sportster?
Anyway dealer obviously didn't want to do it.
Not to worry, easy enough to have a front hub laced to a 40 spoke 16x3 rim.
You will obviously need two wheels as iron alloy on rear and spoked 16" front will look shit, and need to confirm whether new triple trees and forks are needed.
Next thing you'll see and want is a springer front, as on a crossbones.
Buy a bike then see what you don't like. Not going to save any money specing it up at the dealer.
Don't know about $5k to $6k, but the front ends are completely different between iron and 48. Forks are larger diameter on the 48, and the trees are mid glide, I think. Then the cost of the wheels, front and rear as pointed out already. New fork brace and front fender if you want it to be legal. Will also need to replace the headlight mount maybe? The 48 mounts to the bottom triple tree, the Iron to the top.
It would be better to buy a 48 and keep the resale value etc if you really love the large front wheel. Remember, with the 48 you also get a 1200, forward controls and the smaller seat. I looked at both the 48 and the Iron. Went with the iron because it has more of what I want - mid controls, denim paint, narrow front wheel and I prefer the look of the Iron. Lucky for me it was also cheaper! Either way, Iron or 48, they are great bikes and a heap of fun.
yeah you would be much better saving up for the extra to get the 48 if you really want it.
To give you an idea of putting the 48 front end on a nightster its about $2500. Not sure if the iron would be different.
