COMPLETE OIL CHANGE

OK, read/heard about the Scavenger system........very pricey!

With my EVO, I always ran new oil thru motor before fitting new oil filter. This got all the dirty oil out of the motor.

Can I do the same with my Twin cam (dyna), have heard conflicting stories. If it is ok then I will go back to doing it.....sure, makes a mess but nothin a bit of degreaser wont fix.

There is another system out there other than the scavenger. Cost about 10 bucks US... Check out this page http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/technical/896-cheaper-alternative-scavenger-oil-change-system.html

The difference as far as I can make out is that with the EVOs, the oil is filtered on it's way back to the oil tank. (correct me if I am wrong!) So your motor is still getting lubricated by the fresh oil you put in the tank. This new oil is pushing the last of the crap oil out the filter mount, as soon as it clears you shut down motor, install new filter and top up oil.

With the Twin cams, the oil is filtered before it lubricates the motor.......so when performing the "crap oil flush" there is no fresh oil pumping thru the motor.
The BIG question is......are we doing any damage idling the motor for the short time it takes to flush the old oil??

My "guess" is probably not, but I'm no expert and thats why I want to hear from anybody more in the know and get their opinions.
I would think that during the 10 or so seconds it takes to flush the old oil, the residual oil remaining between all the moving parts would cope with the lubrication for that short period of idling.

The CORS system that AJ56 mentioned would be the go for this........keep most of the oil off the front mount!

You could almost make something similar with an old filter, tack a nipple on the right spot, add a hose and push it out away from your motor...

I changed my oil today - I used a centre punch to make a hole in the bottom of the filter, used the old 2 litre plastic bottle to catch the oil for an hr or so - then took the filter off, put the plastic bottle back in place, kicked it over slowly so that it didn't start, all the oil came out. I should have taken the leads off, i will next time

Great!! I'm sold - I always change the oil + filter every 2000 klms - I am going to lash out and pay the $,120 for CMs apparartice then keep an eye on the colour of the oil - I might get to change it every 3 or 4000 klms now
    Cheers

I got the scavenger kit $69.00 delivered the other day and used it yesterday to do an oil change. Ok pretty easy in the end to use. My only concern was that during the change over of oil with the puck in place my oil pressure light came on. this was after a while of running the motor. Checked the oil level and there was heaps in the tank. I intend to ask the question about this as it is not mentioned in the pamphlet. I did run the motor for 10 secs to drain some of the oil back into the tank so it may be the reason. The next time I will do what was mentioned here about removing the plugs and tuning over by hand/starter motor.

I could make the assumption that due to it being a free flow system then no pressure builds up there by the low pressure light comes on. but I want to make sure.

Just read all of this with interest. Has anybody got any idea just how much old oil stays in an EVO of you dont flush it out???  I have never done this but the bike has regular changes. I did comfort myself in thinking that with say guessing maybe 95% new oil (perhaps 5% old dirty residual)  and a clean filter each time this would have been reasonable practice???????????????? - provided the changes are regular?

Used the Scavenger kit from Rogue Chopper for the first time yesterday.
    1. Very easy to use.
    2. A little messy, no worse that a normal oil change though.
Nothing a $2 tin of super-cheap de greaser didn't fix. I pulled out 1 L of return oil as I was going from mineral Harley oil to Mobil 1.
Used all but 4 L for the complete change, that leaves enough out of the box to do the other two holes (maybe today, maybe not).

Went for a ride and checked the oil afterwards and it is as clean as the new stuff in the bottle.

I like and definitely recommend it or a similar system.

Hey Burto that's 12mm hose and a 13mm elbo.I cut the elbo off behind the barb one end and tapered it off with sandpaper to get a nice tight fit.It ended up about 12mm o/d.WAZ!!!!

I'm a bit late coming into this topic, but I am of the school that would prefer a complete oil change rather than a 75 or 80/100 one.  After all who would drain any sump and return even 1/5 of their old oil? What I need explained though is why a puck or a cut down filter is neccessary on a 06 or later Dyna. Surely fitting the new filter instead of the puck would reduce the risk of spillage on the mounts, and since it is only clean oil on it's way from the oil reservoir to the engine, the filter would not be dirtied but filled with fresh oil as it has to be eventually.By the way, good job Burto. Unfortunately for me I melted my plastic before seeing  Burto's solution. Again, why do I need the puck?   Pete.

It's what's inside the motor that travels around the system. You would have oil in the passages before it gets to the oil filter, admittedly not a great deal but though.
