New Drive belt

Have been quoted $764 to change the drive belt $380.18 for parts and $315 for Labour and $69.52 for gst.  Aparently the whole transfere case comes of to chcnge the belt, replace all seals etc and new belt.  Have got a new SE compensator at home and will have them fit that as well while they have it apart.

Back of the belt has a big groove worn in from where I'd say a stone or something got caught between the body and the belt.

Get that inner primary bearing done while they are in there ;)

Thats still cheaper than the two sets of chains and sprockets you would of put on by now PIB.

    cheers

Surly had the same prob in Adelaide PIB....He had to do some powerfull cajolling to get them to check the Inner P bearing asap, as it turned out they had to get one from Melb...That little episode cost us an extra day in Adel.....Would have been longer had they not checked the thing right there and then....Oh!!! and BTW, don't rely on Harley assist when ya break down in bumfuck cos they won't come in a hurry unless ya got a heap of loot and an extra week there as well.....Seems there's a weakness in the RK primary area that's a well kept secret!!!!!

I was wondering what a belt change would cost, now I know FFS...

With this work done and what I replaced in Sept the whole primary has been rebuilt now. Might do anoter 10k on this bike and sell it.  Seems maintenance of the drive system is going to be a ongoing problem.

MIght have to look for a more reliable bike, seems these Harleys do not last the distance.  For the price that we are paying for them they should go 100,000 before any major components need replacing or rebuilding.

jezz  pigironbob you did allright out of your front wheel bearings other guys on the fourms are getting half that  but i agree with you 40,000k is bad when you compare it to other manufactures and not just bikes

Pardon my ignorance, but apart from the wheels locking up, how do you know when the wheel bearings are stuffed? Does she sway all over the road, or can you hear it?

hear and feel it. When the bike is off the ground spin the wheel and test for side play. Dead give away.A slight rumbling is an indicator that the bearings are shot. Side play as well will indicate that they are gone.

I've had a stone hole in mine for at least 4 years...   as long as it's in the middle of the belt it should be ok...  ( fingers crossed )

when it's torn on the edge of the belt it can & will let go...

Being new to a belt-driven bike, was wondering what happens if a belt happens to let go "mid-flight" ? I assume it  to have the same detrimental effects as a broken chain ?

Got my new belt coming from M&M hopefully tomora......Cost of genuine HD belt $170, gaskets and seals $30, freight $35....Landed at my door all up $235....With a little help from my friends, and a carton or two.... fitted. I was quoted $328 belt only here, and they have to order it in....

My belt has done 77000, some reasonably hard, including a trip accross the nula bore, can't complain about that.....

    No brainer realy....
