Is it really necessary to remove the primary to replace clutch plates? Plan on installing a Barnett extra plate kit into my 04 Dyna, an 03 spring (stronger but not as strong as an SE) and 06 Ramps.

Ok, so it's a stupid question! I just figured if you can change the diaphragm, adjust the clutch, install a VPC etc all through the derby cover hole, why not replace the plates? I'm not really stupid, just never done it before.....

     Nado,

I take my primary off every time I change the primary oil and I have never renewed the primary gasket, just follow the sequence for tighten them and use torque wrench to get it right and tight.

By removing the primary cover it will give you more room to get the gas axe in there to remove those stubborn nuts.
