I had a similar problem, bad news is my memory is nearly non excistent, good news is i removed the primary cover and checked it out, from what i can remember there is a nut that holds the starters cog in place and another bit that holds the nut in place, ( was like a locking device ) . the problem with mine was the nut locking device thingy had decided to bend which let the nut to unscrew which loosened the cog on the starter shaft,  end result was, when i tried to start the bike the cog on the starter shaft didnt engage with the cog on the primary shaft which meant the motor didnt turn over, hope that helps.

PS. my bike is alot older than your's so dont know if it all works in the same way.

Not much info to go on but:

Pull the primary cover and check starter cog and jackshaft travel egagement, and of course look at the ring gear. Your looking for a bent or siezed jackshaft and or missing teeth on ring and shaft cog.

If OK pull starter and take it to an workshop that rebuilds starters. Most bits are replaceable with off the shelf automotive bits available anywhere.

do not buy new starter or take to dealer for repair....yet. I also note you have punched your 96" to 103"-- any other changes? Headwork, cams, etc. can work a starter hard....

your comment "it will turn over if you hold the starter button.in untill it engages" makes me think low voltage at the starter solenoid but I'm guessing. Always start troubleshooting with the simple stuff first. JM2C

Let us know how you go.
