Maybe take em to a TV type repair dude or similar and see of they can replace the LED's for ya, might be cheaper than expected.

I would not be to confident adding amber indicators would relieve the defect pressure,

if they are flashing, (the red ones) with the amber ones, they would be a beacon for a policeman in a bad mood, I would suggest making the red ones as brake lights, just add some amber blinkers between them.
