Hi guys,
I ordered some Kuryakyn transformer grips for my 2009 Street Bob, got them the other day it's all good ready to go.
In the mounting instructions they have you loosen the idle and throttle cables in order to remove the throttle grip obviously. When putting the new grip in you have to adjust the throttle and idle cables so they are setup for the new grips. My question is this - not having a service manual for a Dyna (yet! its on my list I promise!): how do I go about adjusting these cables? How do I know they are setup correctly? What do I look for?
Any hints?
Cheers
BT
Slide off the rubber sleeves on the two cables just below where they attach to the right handlebar housing.
You will see a threaded metal tube on each cable with two lock nuts on it, a long one and a short one.
Before you undo the locknuts mark with a texter where they are up to on the thread, this will enable you to adjust them to the same location once the new grip is on.
Loosen the lock nuts and wind the large one up on each cable. This will slacken the cables and enable you to take the throttle grip out.
Be careful when you take the cables out as there are a couple of brass ferrulles on the end of the cable which are quite easy to loose.
Once the new grip is on and the cables are inserted properly just do the reverse to tighten the cable and adjust to where you marked it with the texter.
Thanks Chops, that would probably work very well, I'm just concerned that the mounting points where the cables hook in might not be exactly where the standard grips would be resulting in either slightly looser or tighter cables? I havent compared them yet though.
So if I didnt mark the positions beforehand and just took everything off and put the new grips on, what would be the technique then? Without having done this before and not having a manual with me I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of twisting throttle grip to WOT and taking up any slack on the pull cable, then releasing the throttle and taking up any slack from the push cable? Would that work? I suppose there should be *some* slack on the throttle cables though to compensate for heat expansion etc? how do I know exactly how much slack is enough or too much? :p
Even without marking the previous adjustment, the cables are quite easy to adjust, as you said, put the new grip on then just try it out. It would be best before you take the old one off to see how much play is on the throttle when you pull it back, then just try to match that when you put the new one on.
The manual recommends that you should adjust the cables so that when you open the throttle there is a few milimeters of play before it engages. That is don't do them up so tight that the throttle engages instantly as soon as the throttle is pulled back.
