How to remove saddle bag frames / indicators?

    G'day all,

my '04 Dyna super glide has saddle bag frames (for soft bags)  that I want to remove. The rear indicator wiring and holder goes through one of the mounting points. I have worked out how to take the indicator off, can remove the lens cover, but I can't work out how to detach the wiring for the indicator so I can slide the saddle bag frame off then put it back together.

Any help would be appreciated, have looked but can't find a thread with the answers here, thanks.

Mark, not sure on the '04's but on my 2000, pull the tailight cover and you'll see where the indicator loom plugs in.
The best way is to unplug and then remove the two wires/pins from the plug, then they should pull through.
Then just put the wires back in the plug.

You need to unscrew the tail light lens and behind it there is a circuit board that both your tail/brake lights and both indicators plug in to. On either side of the circuit are small connectors with a large one sort of in the middle, just off to the side, the other side your tail light plugs into (left hand side by memory). The small one's are your indicator lugs.

Take a small screw driver and depress the little lug at the top of the connector and it should slide out allowing you to pull the wiring out through the strut and then out of the saddle bag frame. Assuming it has the same tail light set-up as mine had. I know some people have ran wiring the oposite way and up under the seat.

Hi guys .. very helpful and the extract from the manual.. can't ask for much better explanation.. just wondering about the ramifications of copyright on this.. ? only thinking of your security and that of HD Forum Australia ..

I'm all for it.. and could and would like to assist in the same way.. but unsure on the ethics ... I must read the rules a bit closer.. to see if it is ok..

Great help for Mark .. all the same

thanks deadwood and speedzter, will have a look bit closer - behind the indicator lens seems to be a sealed unit so will go in via tail light assembly and see how it goes. don't think im going to loose any sleep over possible copyright ramifications..

    An update;

As per manual posted - that info was correct, few small things to note for anyone following this at home. The indicator wires do unplug from behind the tail light, however when you go to pull the wires through the indicator stalk it doesn't fit through the retaining nut that holds the stalk inside the mud guard, the diameter of the nut is too narrow to allow the connector block to pass through.

The indicator wires do not pull out of the connector block, i noticed that mine had been cut, soldered and heat shrunk just before the connector block - presumably when they were done to fit the saddle bags in the first place. So to pull them through and remove the frames i ended up re-cutting mine and getting it done. I re-connected with auto male / female connectors so I can pull them apart easily next time, I had to use the smallest ones available to fit back inside the tail light lens cover, very limited space.

Second point to note - the mounting bolts- A) that go through the indicator stalk, and - B) the second set that mount at the front of the saddle bag frames are longer than stock to allow (about 15mm) of saddle bag frame thickness, withouth the frames on the bolts go too long into the mud guard and would have been very close to rubbing the tyre over any bump. I have had to put some spacers on mine to keep more bolt outside the guard until I get some proper fitting ones.

Everything else went well, anyone looking to buy some soft saddle bag frames and a sissy bar / rack, genuine HD????

MD, the pins DO come out of the connector. As with most of the other connectors on the bike.
You just need to use the right method to release them (a small pick tool).
It's all explained in the service manual.

thanks again speedzter - obviously worth investing in a service manual..
