Hi All,
Recently I imported from the US an 82 shovel fitted with with straight drag pipes. I want to get the bike to pass compliancing with a VASS engineer but I am told the bike will need to be under 100 decibels at 2500 rpm, at present I am well beyond this target. Could any one offer some advice or opinion on how to lower the noise level by using internal baffles etc. without buying stock pipes for the bike.
Any help is much appreciated
hi
i have an 83 shovell with drag pipes,i fitted 3" internal baffles that i bought off flee bay, they do quiet it down but not enough for r,w,c,so i wrapped metal fly wire around them and wound some tie wire around that to keep it in place, went back and passed test, then removed fly wire and put baffles back in,worked for me and bike is not to quiet either, hope this helps.love my shovell.
try something like this, easy enough to make:

Redbluff, i used to have a shovel was putting out good horsepower so was loud, i got a defect they said was 120d but think they checked it at higer rev. i rolled up chook wire very tight onto a screw driver then pushed it tight up the pipe put a bolt across each end & past the test think was 100d but i had cycle shack tappered end duels ( look like stock, no baffles they had a hole at each end to hold baffles in used the holes to put the bolts through to keep chook wire in. this was many moons ago b4 we got compulsary helmet laws but 100d is still 100d
good luck. personaly i would buy a set of Sonic duels with baffles, they are made in Victoria they work, they are cheap, they look good & the bike will run heaps better have more low end torque & be a better long term thing. as putting baffles & wire up drag pipes is like sticking a plug up your arse and trying to fart. the bikes feel flat with open drag pipes, and feel worse with baffled. the tappered end duels with baffles work well. just my 5cent
