260km to a tank of fuel

Okay, since fitting the Thundermax I am getting less km's from a tank of gas. This is ok by me because it means the scoot is running richer. Two up with varied riding including some mountain ranges and some flat stuff the bike returned approx 260km from a tank of fuel compared to the 320km or more that I used to get. The service manual says the total tank capacity is 18.92 litres which I am assuming includes reserve which is stated as 1.89 litres. This means I am now getting 13.74 km to a litre, is this about what I should expect ?? Also I have noticed when the bike starts it revs slightly higher before settling into its 890rpm idle speed, is this also normal with the T-MAX ??

Thanks Scotty, what is your cold start and normal running temp idle speed set at  ??

I also get about 290km when crusing, which is fine by me.

Hey Scotty, what are your thoughts on the IAC auto function, helpful or not? I was reading that it will assist with a quick learn on ya bike for the cold start up to warm.

It was Heavy duty Motorcycles (The Importers/Distributors) that told me to set the warm idle at 896. Who did you get your info about lack of scavenging from Darkash?

So if a bloke was to fit an aftermarket oil pump to a 96" that flowed at a higher rate, would it be safe to lower the idle speed or are you still playing with the old scavenging fire?

You would think if it flowed at a higher rate it would be ok ? But that would depend on how low you want to set the idle .

    Hey Guy's
I've been running the Thunder Max for about 8 months now and constantly average 300k's and when I fill up there is about 1 to 2 litres still in the tank, and thats with giving it a squirt every now and then.

Yeah I might have a go at leaning it off in cruise mode as soon as I figure out how ?? But the figures I'm getting are always two up and a lot of mountain ranges, but the bike is running great so I am not overly concerned.

Ok,we are back from Tenterfield and one run we did which inclued the Bruxner Hwy 2up with loaded saddle bags and other stuff returned 280km with 3 litres left in the tank. Then another run from Lismore to Surfers partly via the Murwillumba hinterland returned 230km with 4 litres left in the tank ?? BIG DIFFERENCE.

I am pretty sure it's always through the exhaust although it isn't severe. I wouldn't think the bike is running lean, if anything it burns a bit rich which explains the extra fuel it is using. When it comes to plugs everyone seems to have a different opinion on how to read them, all I can tell you is they are black around the outer ring and white to tan on the centre electrode.

Ok guys, on the next ride I will take a lot more notice about exactly where and when it is happening and get back to you, thanks.  Scotty I can't do a data run until I can borrow the son in laws laptop again and then I'm not sure how to send you the file anyway ? Computers,I still prefer carbys.

Well that is very generous of you Bob but its good having my son in law here to give me a hand as he is much better with this stuff than I am. Thanks again, we should just forget all about this and go for a ride.

From the info I have recieved on the forum the oil scavenging is a problem with later models but I am not sure if this applies to Sportys ? You need to get your idle speed up around 960rpm to avoid problems with the Twin Cam engines.

I've noticed a variation on milage gained just from the fuel available. Some of the Western Queensland towns don't carry premium fuel and the 91ron stuff gives poorer milage.

Well we just went for a 60km ride and not a pop or backfire to be heard, which makes me wonder if it all has to do with fuel ?? The mileage is sitting on 195km with at least a third of a tank to go. Last time I fueled up it was with bp ultimate, so I might continue using that for a while and see if it runs consistantly better.
