Screens revisited

As we have a few recent bagger converts despite Dazza's best efforts I thought it might be worth going over peoples thoughts on screens for either the screened or batwinged bikes.

My thoughts after a year and 24,000km

    Bare

Awesome around town and on shorter trips and looks cool. Not great for protection as you sit very high on these bikes.

    Stock

I have ridden across the country and back behind this. It is 21 inches from the top of the headlight to the top of the screen.

When it is hot you get hot. When it is wet you stay reasonably dry upto the point of Qld torrnetial rain...then you get soaked.

It has just enough buffeting that it rattles your visor if it is up and when it is hot your visor will be up. Not bad with the visor down or in open face. You feel like you are sitting in a slight vacuum and get a sensation of constantly falling forward that is a little weird at first.

    Wind deflector

This is 12 inches from the top of the headlight to to the top of the screen.

For day rides and general use it is awesome. It keeps the wind off of your body but leaves your helmet in smooth air. Not sure it would be that great in rain or keeping bugs and road crap off you on a very long ride. No buffeting

IMHO it looks good enough to leave on full time and I rarely remove it since getting it.

I am currently trying to decide between the stock and shorty screen for the trip over east this time. If the forecast is hot and dry it will be the shorty or pissing down (again) the stock.

No comment on the Batwing but love to here everyone elses thoughts on their various setups.

    cheers

My Triumph had one when I got it.I wasnt happy because it was too low.Got a one made by eagle screens 4 inches taller and 2 inches wider and still not happy as it sucks the visor upwards at 100+ kph.

I found those little flyscreens do the job,no buffeting or having to decide whether you want to look over it or under it.

Gidday Everyone.                   This is my first input into this forum ( Apart from the introduction ). I have just bought a 2011 road king  ( First Harley ). On the ride home after picking the bike up I rode 100klm without the windscreen. I have neck problems so this was not very smart ....... anyway, I found that at about 100klm /h it felt good ( no buffeting and very little wind noise ) but was sore when I got home.

The next ride was about 140klm with the standard screen on, I wore a full face helmet and sat on between 80klm/h and 130klm/h. The ride was much better with no wind pressure although a little buffeting. The main thing I didn't like was that I was looking through the Screen as I am 160cm tall.

I also ride a BMW K1200rs which I have done 120,000 Klm on with various screens for touring with. The latest screen I use on the BMW is the stock standard one with a " Laminar Lip " attached. This allows me to see over the screen with all of the air flow going over the top with no buffeting at all ................. so I have ordered the 16" Harley short screen so that I can see over it and I have also ordered a Laminar Lip to attach to it. I hope to receive these within the next couple of weeks.

I am riding from SW WA to Victoria with some mates next week to do the Great Ocean Road ( On the BMW because the Harley isn't run in yet ) and will be back home mid March. I will try out the short screen with and without the Laminar Lip and let you know how it goes.

     Regards

Hi all, sorry to have been a bit tardy but I have fitted the new screen and in amongst the rain we have been having here in Alice Springs, I've managed to road test it on the highway. To revisit my story I have a 2008 HD Ultra Classic which had an aftermarket 6" dark tinted screen which you can see in the photo below.

The previous owner who was a bit shorter than me seemed to have no problem with the previous screen but me being a few inches taller found that I had buffeting at cruising speed. It was pretty annoying and so I started looking at different options. I looked at the Windvest, Eagle and the National Cycle V Stream before I came across the Long Ride Shield.

So after a bit or research on sizes and types I settled on an 8" Ultra with a mid tint. The screen top is about level with my mouth and the idea is that the curl on the screen should deflect oncoming air up and over your head. You can see the two different screens in the photo below and although there is not a huge amount of difference, about 2", I am happy with the improvement and sure as hell I don't want to look through a taller screen!!

The final product fitted (below) was worth the $90 delivered price (on special at the time) from the States and it looks nice on the bike. I know that this type of thing is a bit to do with personal choice but I thought I'd give you my appraisal on a change that I believe for me at least has been a move forward.

I've also just fitted an UHF radio to the Ultra but that's another story...

    Hello Guys,

I have had tall screens, that I don't like in the rain as double drops on my Full Face helmet screen and the big screen on the bike combined is too distracting.  It makes you want to put on windscreen wipers...   I have had about four different screens on Road King and Ultra, and the best was about a 6" dark tint from HD, no buffeting.  It was that shortie like AussieRanger shows, dark tint, and you hunker down behind it or look over... It looks cool and does the job to have.. or to have not...  Get one that is about level with just about your nose when sitting relaxed for your height.  Then you can sit up straight for more air or hunker down to get out of the wet.. You can have them cut down by a Professional for about $25, taped off, jig sawed fine over the tape, then sanded and polished edge.

My new discovery here is the best of the best, as it centers the bike to go hands free, less buffeting, and for me at 6'1" I have to sit straight to get the wind or rain in the face, or relax and hide behind it...  Here shown on my  2011 CVO Street Glide.  I would have this again, and will do so on my 2011.5 BIG BLUE coming in July... Not only no buffeting, but it seems to hold the bike more true on a straight line.
