I bought a '92 a few months back and I love it.  As dave says it's all in the price.  All depends on what you want to do with it too, for short trips they are great but I wouldn't want to do an interstate trip on one.

One thing I really like about the pre 2004 sporties is they are bloody light a good 20-30 kilos lighter than the newer ones makes riding them a whole lot of fun.

Go for a 92- 93 up belt drive 5 speed 1200, they are bulletproof and cheap. 96 on 1200 sportster sport are the best if you can get one. Interstate trips are easy.
