    Gday,

got a clicking sound happening when i press start button.

battery fully charged just no turnover only clicks around the starter motor area maybe above at another relay looking box.

was starting intermittantly if one played around a bit but now just all clicks.

tapping the starter not working as it sometimes does on cars.

any tests or places to look before i start unbolting bits?

    thanks in advance

    gday Cruzees,

just a thought, get a wire and go from the main battery feed to the starter and bridge it to the ignition feed on the starter.  Just be carefull not to touch any metal parts at it live from the battery......sparks!

    Ok ...

just shorted starter with a screwdriver as ya do with a car .... it whirrrs but no engagement to start ( no turnover)

    so starter getting power.

but when hit starter button still clicks from around rear of bike ..sounds like its not from actual starter tho . bit higher...

lol Bucket . if it was a honda i,d just leave it out front for some prick to steal it rather than fix it.

thanks for help so far ..

just trying tests so i dont buy something i dont need

i dont know what starter your running but mine a fantastic NIPPON DENSO (made in Japan) starter.   if i could only get a bigger battery into the tight area i would be better off.

sounds like the solnoid plunger in your starter  what year bike is it ?   you could try and bypass the starter button and run a wire from battery 12v to the exciter wire terminal on the starter (spade terminal) if it still clicks it is not the switch or wiring or relay ,just touch the the terminal as it may or will turn the mtr over and make sure its not in gear  no need to have ignition on .

Sounds very much like the starter solenoid isn't making contact..

Depending upon which type it is, you may be able to pull it to bits and clean the contacts,,, if there's anything left of them.

If not, and it's use-by date has arrived,,,, you know the story.

im not sure what bike you have nor what starter but you may have the starter solinoid tucked up in the frame (near the battery?) could be causing some of the problems.

can you follow the main battery cable to where it ends?

if its the later nippon starter, they use gear reduction through the clutch in the front housing. the contacts are just under the 3 screw cap at the back with the plunger. they have a coil which pulls the plunger down which in turn gives you the 12v battery supply to crank the motor. main things that play up on them is the contacts (best thing to fu*k them up is winding the motor over with low battery voltage) and the plunger (the contacts touch this in the working mode). Japs build good simple gear reduction starter motors.

you may have a early style evo starter which is simler to a shovel  which has a seprate solnoid to main starter.

I had this happen and it turned out to be the 2 screws that hold the cap onto the solenoid, workin loose, fixed a shovel on the Lap of the bay ride with exact same problem. His screws had come out far enough to be arcing fireworks everywhere under the pos(?) wire

+ one to what kiwidav said  get  a 4 pin 12v 30amp  relay  from repco or any auto shop   85 earth   86  12v from old eciter wire  30 from 12v batt or ing   87 to the starter   or work out your  old relay wires and replace that way. buy a bosch  thay are the better relays i have found  over the years.
