I ALWAYS get my stuff from o/s. The only reason I ever go into a local dealer is to size something. As long as you go through a proper dealer, you'll be fine. Some of the ones I've dealt with are MC Motorcycle Parts & Accessories, House of Harley-Davidson Milwaukee, Eastern Performance Cycles, Capital City HD, Bad Ass Chrome, and heaps of others. Fav's are probably Bad Ass Chrome and Capital City HD because their S&H is usually cheaper than the others. I've said it before a hundred times, I'll start 'supporting' local dealers when they stop trying to rip me off by charging double (or more) for something I can get retail for less than half the price from o/s (inc. postage).

 To get the bits & pieces installed (if it's out of your expertise) - how do the dealers react? Or is it something you find someone else to fit? For instance, I want some new shocks, but I don't have any kit to lift the bike or anything and so imagine it'll be mighty difficult without buying a bunch of stuff - am I going to struggle with getting the dealer to put on new shocks I didn't get off them?

Hey daimoh, you dont need much to change the rear shocks. I used a tie down ($10 for two from Bunnings) and some rags - piece of piss to change rear shocks.

Thanks TC - that's a good thread that got me thinking all sorts of things I shouldn't be thinking about (lowering/shorter shocks for one).

I might have to go ahead and get some of those Ikons - front and rear I think. It's a shame the stock shocks are so crap - had to ride on a few goat tracks last Sunday - bloody scary on those fast corners.
