What are the best methods of keeping engine locked whilst doing up comp nut?

Yeah, obviously you need to use nice clean rope, but the worst thing your gonna leave in there is maybe some nylon fibres, which will burn away real quick.
..........and if you find that the rope wont pull out, chances are you weren't on the compression stroke and have got the rope jammed in a closing valve.
Just turn engine back the other way till it releases.
