In spite even.
So I finally got myself an IRON, but I don't trust dealerships.
I was told that if i suplied the parts to do a jugs and wiseco r/d 1200 conversion, it would take the dealership 6 hrs to get done and would be priced accordingly.
Is it just me or does that sound like a long time for a mechanic who only works on HD engines?
My experience is extreemly limited with HD gear but I was under the impression that all the work
required to do the conversion could be achieved with minimal fuss and in the frame.
Isn't it a matter of dissassemble, clean gasket surfaces, reassemble?
Iv'e seen a decent car mechanic do a similar job on a cortina in about 3 hrs while drinking and bullshitting. And it was in the engine bay!
One of the biggest reasons i switched to HD was because I thought I'd be able to do most of my own wrenching.
At this early stage of my HD journey I'm a bit shy about trying a major job like this myself, but it makes me think.
Does anyone know a trustworthy wrench in Sydney? I'd really like to get an opinion from someone who has a rep for straightshooting.
By the way, the bike is great.
Just not so sure the front end is supposed to clunk so much on bumps?(thinking steering head loose or fork internals just budget)
And I wasn't aware the heads and oil lines were still prone to weeping.
Any advice/pointers/friendly ribbing welcome.
Cheers, Kane.
6 hours is about right for this job, I had it done on my '07 and it was about that.
Trust me, what you want is this, its the newly released for 2011stage 2 kit Harley offers that even the dealers don't seem to know exists yet, made SPECIFICALLY for the Iron, and a BARGAIN in HD terms for all genuine parts. Heck, Google and even HD's USA website doesn't list it - but it exists! Part number: HD-29836-10 RRP: $1269.95USD (only $1066 at Zanottis!)
Was quoted 8-9hours for fitting by Frasers today at $132 per hour
Kit includes
All black 1200 cylinders to match the Iron
FORGED 10.5:1 Screamin Eagle piston kit
551 SCreamin Eagle camshafts
1200 clutch spring
Screamin Ealge Super Pro Tuner kit
This allows you to keep your warranty and not only get 1200ccs but forged pistins and bigger cams. Nothing comes close value for money wise if you buy the kit out of the USA right now with the strong Aussie dollar and have your dealer fit it.
Note that adding a 30T front secondary drive sprocket (PN: 40380-04) will gear it closer to the 1200 too, which is what I'm doing.
Thats awesome Damon. I was looking for a kit like this.

Zot, i was just talking to Cow from L A Cycles he said he does not re size the 883 to 1200 now as cheaper to buy 1200 barrels, takes him too long to get them machined out as over 1/4" has to come out of the cast iron linner.
but if someone really wants there 883 barrels resized i know a guy that has a rottler it can take 1/4" out the bore in one run perfectly true perfectly straight then he finishes off with his Sunnen Cylinder King has torque plates to suit.
Brucy, so they now have a thin linner? so how to they get the 1200 barrels to fit the 883 cases? As the barrel if it has a thinner linner the hole in the case the barrel fits into will be smaller. how do they get around that?
Damon.
What progressive springs did you use up front on your Iron? Is it part # 11-1527, not sure what to get as yet. I also want 440 shocks at rear lowered by 2".
This Screaming Eagle 1200 kit for the Iron is also what I will get. I think I will purchase it from the US and just get the dealer to fit it for me. I was going for the stage 1 kit at the beggining
but now this new one is the go. I rang one dealer regarding their stage 1 kit and they said it sells for $1900, another dealer said $3000. Anyway I have been looking at your Iron and I like
what you have done.
I have just started looking into the 1200 upgrade, spoke to Fraser's in the Gong and they quoted up to 8hrs to get the job done. Already put the stage 1 kit on the bike, so I figure I should be able to flog the race tuner off on eBay for about 400 bucks, which should reduce some of the cost?
I have been chatting to a few blokes on the XLForum site who have recommened a few other upgrades that increase the 883 to 1250 (83hp), which is insane for a sporty!!
Still tyring to decide on the best approach?
