How do you repair primary cover?

    Hi Gents,

    Need some advice please.

Primary cover on my 52 Pan has some damage and a few small creases/hairlines cracks right at the bottom of the cover. I was wondering what involved in fixing the cracks/holes?

What material is it made of? Is there anyone who specialises in repairing this to a factory standard? I don't mind sending it over to another state...

    Thanks
    Vlad

    Thanks Chopaweeza.
I've been trying darn hard to keep the bike as close to the original as possible. Sure I can get an aftermarket primary for a Pan but I would rather repair the original. The one I have on it is the original primary cover. I am going to send it over to have it dechromed and then follow your advice and have it welded it up. Mate of mine is a good welder, so shouldn't be much of a problem for him. (or so I hope)

Normally, when you weld a steel, you'd need to use mild steel rod. Are you suggesting to just braze it with bronze?

    Thanks
    Vlad

Thanks again chopaweeza, you sound like a real metallurgist..
You kind of made me worried a bit with these extra steps I need to take.
But as you said earlier, the devil is in the detail, and doing it properly will ensure that the primary won't fall apart in a long run.
So just to clarify, before I get it welded, I shall bolted it down to a 10mm steel plate?

Then use the same plate to normalise it?
